CSD Superintendent Update
WEEK #25, 3.4.22, Cambrian School District
Dear Cambrian Families,
GREAT NEWS!
We are honored and thrilled that Price Middle School has been selected for the 2022 Glenn Hoffmann Exemplary Program Award, presented by the Santa Clara County School Boards Association. Price’s robust mental health program will be recognized at the May 11th awards ceremony, which recognizes the best school programs within Santa Clara County schools. Way to go, Price!
CSD PHONES ARE UP AND WORKING
MASK UPDATES
As you may recall from the message I sent out Wednesday, this week Governor Gavin Newsom issued a joint statement with the governors of Washington and Oregon, adopting new indoor masking policies for school settings. During a press conference, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) shared its Guidance for TK-12 Schools. After March 11, 2022, in schools and child care facilities, masks will not be required but will be strongly recommended. Additionally, Santa Clara County announced that it is lifting its indoor masking mandate on Wednesday, March 2.
What does this mean for Cambrian Schools?
CSD will follow this updated guidance: Effective Monday, March 14, 2022, indoor masks will be strongly recommended, not required, for students and staff. Outdoor masking will go from strongly recommended to optional starting immediately.
Cambrian School District will continue to:
provide a safe, kind and respectful environment that supports all choices.
offer weekly testing through COVID Clinic (Parents and siblings of Cambrian students register using this link: https://www.covidclinic.org/cambrian-school-district, staff and students register using this link: http://school.covidclinic.org)
implement protocols around quarantine, isolation, symptom monitoring, and hygienic practices
send group exposure notices to classes
implement appropriate COVID protocols at our school events
follow and implement CDPH guidance as the pandemic continues to shift
We appreciate your continued partnership as we implement our state and county safety protocols. With the new guidance, we recognize that families will make their own decisions regarding masking based on their individual family situations. Please take a moment to talk with your children about being kind and respectful to their peers who may choose differently than your family. Together, we are continuing a culture of kindness, respect, and acceptance.
Thank you for your continued support of all things Cambrian. Our very special district is extraordinary because of the committed staff, students and families that do so much to serve our collective community. So grateful for each one of you!
SCHOOL BOARD OFFICE HOURS
On February 3, 2022, the Governing Board approved to move forward with implementing regular, open-door meetings with community members. This is an opportunity for the Board of Trustees to meet with the community and staff outside of the regularly scheduled board meetings. SOCIAL EMOTIONAL STUDENT CHECK-IN
In order to learn more about student experiences across the Cambrian School District, we have partnered with Kelvin Education this year to conduct district-wide student surveys for children in grades Pk-8. Through these surveys, the school will gain valuable information about the social-emotional needs of our students and the climate and culture of our schools. The results of these surveys help inform both school-based and district-wide initiatives to support the social and emotional health of our community.
Kelvin Education is a leader in the field of education data collection and analysis. Their surveys have been used by school districts across the country. The use of Kelvin Education’s research validated survey instruments and data management platform will provide us with comprehensive, user-friendly reports to inform programming to improve school climate and culture, students’ social emotional learning, and family and community engagement. The survey gathers information on the following:
Student/Family Engagement: How involved are students/families with their schools?
Social-Emotional Learning: How do students perceive their development of social-emotional skills like self-management and resilience?
School Climate: How do you see the overall social and learning climate of the school?
Teacher/Student and Family Relationships: How strong is the social connection between teachers and students within and beyond school?
If you are interested in learning more about the research and findings that support these studies and data collection, please take a look at a recent brief from Penn State on The Integration of Two Approaches: School Climate and Social and Emotional Learning (It's not 'brief', but it is insightful.)
How will students take the Kelvin Education survey?
When: The survey will be administered between March 2022 and June 2022.
How: The Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment is a Federal Law that requires us to notify parents ahead of time about the survey and give them the opportunity to review it in advance so they can let us know if they do not want their child to take part. A copy of the survey can be provided upon request. The deadline to opt-out on behalf of the student is March 18, 2022. The opt-out will need to be provided to the school in writing.
We appreciate your time and attention to this, as well as your support as we look to understand the climate in our schools and how we can best benefit our students' social and emotional health. If you have any questions about the survey, please don’t hesitate to contact your school site principal.
