STAAR Tests - May 14th and May 15th

All 3rd grade students will be taking the STAAR Math and Reading tests on Monday, May 14th and Tuesday, May 15th. Our generous PTO is providing snacks and water to all students testing. Students will be testing throughout the building, so we ask that visits to campus on testing days be kept to a minimum. Visitors will not be allowed in testing areas of the campus or be able to eat lunch with 3rd grade students on testing days.

If you have a student testing, please make sure that he/she gets plenty of rest the night before the tests, and arrives at school on time.

Keep in mind that the purpose of the STAAR test is to see how students have mastered the skills taught all year, and it is just one of the many measures we use to ensure that students have mastered the skills needed to be successful next year.

LVES is a designated No Place For Hate Campus!

Read more about our accomplishment in Mrs. Sexton's Counselor's Corner! I am so proud of our Project Vinatta student coalition group, and LVES students, for helping our campus earn this honor! A special thanks to Mrs. Sexton for being our Project Vinatta sponsor.

There is an end of year activity for our Project Vinatta student coalition on Friday, May 18th. The student coalition group will travel to the PAC with other campus student coalitions to participate in year end activities. Mrs. Sexton sent home a permission slip and information about this event.

Stop by the Reading Lab on Friday, May 18th from 7:50-11:00 am for a yummy brunch, as our way of saying "THANK YOU"!

Ocean Week 2018 is almost here!

Ocean Week 2018 is May 21st-24th. This is a yearly tradition of studying about the different habitats of the ocean, and is filled with many hands-on activities and research. Grade level hallways will be turned into different ocean habitats that students have researched throughout the week. Here is the schedule for the week:

  • Monday, May 21st: Bubbles and Blubber
  • Tuesday, May 22nd: Touch Tanks
  • Wednesday, May 23rd: Fishing/Casting
  • Thursday, May 24th: Biologist Demonstration; Closing Ceremony from 1:30-2:30.

Due to the timing of Ocean Week this year, Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be combined into one ceremony. All grade levels will have a part in the Closing Ceremony. There will not be a Learning Showcase this year, however, students will still complete the Scavenger Hunt through the different habitats at school with the classroom teacher.

Transportation Changes for May 25th

May 25th is the last day of school, end of year party day, and early release at 11:30 am. All transportation changes for May 25th must be in on or before May 24th. Transportation changes will not be accepted on May 25th. Thank you for your help in making dismissal on the last day of school go smoothly!

Student Placement Forms - PK -2nd Grade Students Only

We will begin preparations in the coming weeks for classroom placements for the 2018-2019 school year. Our primary commitment is toward success for all students by creating balanced classes. The creation of classrooms is a collective effort of the staff. We assemble those who are familiar with your child and the chemistry among the children. Adjustment to class lists by the campus administrators is an ongoing process due to student enrollment and withdrawal during the summer. For this reason, final class lists will not be available until Meet The Teacher Night in August.

As at any campus, the faculty for next year may change throughout the spring and summer due to personal choice, personnel changes and campus needs/growth. Therefore, specific teacher requests for your child will not be accepted.

We would like to give parents the opportunity to share their thoughts regarding their PK-2nd grade child's characteristics and needs within the learning community. Again, specific teacher requests will not be accepted. If you would like to provide input for your child, please fill out the Student Placement Profile and return to the front office on or before Friday, May 18th. This is a firm deadline. Forms submitted after this date will not be considered.

LVES 2018-2019 School Supply Orders

Dress Code Reminders

Spring has sprung here in Central Texas. Warmer weather is here, so that means that shorts and tank tops are being worn. Please remember that shorts/skirts must be fingertip length. Tank tops are permitted, but strapless, halter tops, racerback tanks and spaghetti straps are not permitted. Students wearing strapless, halter tops, racerback tanks or spaghetti strap tops will be asked to change or wear a sweater or jacket. You can read the LVISD dress code by clicking on the following link:

http://www.lagovistaisd.net/users/0001/student/LVISD%20Standards%20of%20Attire.pdf

It's always a good idea to leave the sandals, flip flops and dress shoes at home, as our students have PE and/or recess everyday. Tennis shoes are a much safer shoe option for our LVES Vikings, especially on PE days.

Lost and Found Overflowing

Time is running out to claim any lost items from the Lost and Found, as we still have several unclaimed items! Any items still in Lost and Found on the last day of school will be donated.

Character Trait of the Month - Gratitude

May's Character Trait is Gratitude. Here are ways that students can demonstrate Gratitude:

  • Say thank you for things that you receive;
  • Think about what you are thankful for and why;
  • Show others how nice it feels to be remembered and appreciated by someone;
  • Write thank you cards;
  • Enjoy giving back;
  • Understand that you are not owed things; you earn them.

Students will learn more about Gratitude in Guidance with Mrs. Sexton!

Counselor's Corner

Hello LVES Families! It is with great excitement that I announce that with the hard work and dedication of our Project Vinátta student coalition, and our campus-wide participation, Lago Vista Elementary is now a designated No Place for Hate® school! Our school activities this year that promoted kindness, anti-bullying, and respecting all people have earned us this award from the Anti-Defamation League®. This is the first year our campus has earned this designation, and my goal is to help us attain it every year!

This is our last week of guidance lessons for the school year, and we have been learning what it means to have Gratitude. When children understand what it means to be grateful for what they have, it can have a positive effect on their attitude and perspective. At home, think about starting a gratitude journal with your child! Get a blank notebook (I have many--if you’d like for me to send one home with your child, let me know!) and work together to design it. Each night, or as often as possible, spend time together adding the things you are thankful for.

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” ~Oprah Winfrey

¡Hola familias LVES!

~Oprah Winfrey
