News & Notes from Josiah Haynes Elementary School

January 28, 2021

Dear Families,

On Monday we mark the midpoint of the school year. Milestones throughout the course of a school year are always important, but marking this one and all the others that come along this year feels especially significant. Hitting the halfway mark of our school year means a lot. It means we stayed the course, played by the rules, sacrificed, problem-solved and persevered—all in the name of working to assure the best for our students. Getting here means we are doing it, and it's working. In the time we've been in school and learning from home we've accomplished so much.

But halfway is only halfway, and we have a whole half ahead. In the weeks and months before us we will undoubtedly be faced with new challenges and new opportunities. We will continue to adapt, problem-solve and push. Along the way, it is my hope for our community that we continue to exercise great compassion and patience for one another and for ourselves as we support our students and one another. This is hard, but we are doing it, and there are bright days ahead. We have reason to celebrate and be proud of reaching the midpoint of our year.

Happy Halfway Day!

Fitness Challenge Continues Through February 7

What an amazing start to our Fitness Challenge! It has been wonderful to see, hear and read about everything our students are doing at home to keep their bodies healthy and strong, establishing wonderful practices and habits along the way. It's not too late to join in! Log your physical activity and earn an official Haynes Hawk bracelet. Log over 50 points and you'll be entered for a chance to win several grand prizes like a ladder ball set or Kan Jam game! For more details on the Challenge, click here. School Counseling Week

February 1-5, 2021 is National School Counseling Week. This is a wonderful time to recognize the important role of support for student mental health within the school, and to celebrate the professionals who work as our leaders in this important work. At Haynes, we are so lucky to have School Counselor Veronica Rogers supporting our students and families. School Psychologist Melanie Francer and Social Worker Jenn Vlacovsky complement our mental health team. The impact of these professionals is significant. Thank you for all you do!

Haynes to Celebrate World Read Aloud Day February 3

Haynes is looking forward to celebrating World Read Aloud Day on February 3rd. This day unites people around the world by highlighting the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories. To celebrate, various children’s authors will be visiting our classrooms virtually! These visits will provide students with an opportunity to have a conversation with a published writer and to listen to excerpts from one of their books. Below are the authors that will be visiting our school:

Thank You, HOP!

Haynes School extends our gratitude to the Haynes Organization of Parents for grant funding to purchase and install a new digital display screen in our back lobby. The new screen mirrors the display in our front office and provides our community with information and updates. At the moment students are able to view classmates' submissions from the Haynes Fitness Challenge on the screen, along with reminders about safety protocols and our school rules. Soon students who receive Hawk Sightings will see their names listed on the screen as well. Thank you, HOP!
