INCREASING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
WITH CHOICE, CREATIVITY, COMPLEXITY, & CURIOSITY
Workshop Description:
This interactive session is one part Choose Your Own Adventure and one part professional development, where you are in the driver's seat! Together we will explore a menu of instructional strategies designed to meaningfully engage your students in the learning process. Your choices and interests will guide us through a series of technology infused creativity activities designed to pique and develop students’ curiosity. Regardless of the choices, everyone will leave with access to all of the resources!
This session will meet the following gifted competencies: (a) "The ability to differentiate instruction based on a student’s readiness, knowledge, and skill level, including using accelerated content, complexity, depth, challenge, creativity and abstractness.”
(c) "The ability to provide an extension or replacement of the general education curricula, to modify the learning process through strategies such as curriculum compacting and to select alternative assignments and projects based on individual student needs.”
Target audience: K-12 Educators & Administrators
Lunch will be provided and all participants will receive 5.5 contact hours.
This workshop is FREE for North Point staff and all educators from NPESC's client districts. Registration for non-client districts is $75 per person payable to NPESC. Space is limited to 150 participants.

Presenter: Dr. Brian Housand
Dr. Housand, is the coordinator of the Academically or Intellectually Gifted program at University of North Carolina Wilmington. Dr. Housand earned a Ph.D. in educational psychology at the University of Connecticut with an emphasis in both gifted education and instructional technology. He served two terms on the National Association for Gifted Children’s Board of Directors as a Member-At-Large. Along with his wife Dr. Angela Housand and Dr. Joe Renzulli, he co-authored Using the Schoolwide Enrichment Model with Technology. He is also the author of Fighting Fake News! Teaching Critical Thinking and Media Literacy in a Digital Age. Brian has worked in education as a classroom teacher, a teacher of the gifted, and a university professor for over twenty years. As a speaker and consultant, he has presented in 38 states, Canada, Australia, South Korea and Kuwait. Brian is a lover of technology, Star Wars, video games, and fonts, and he proudly identifies himself as a geek.
