Spring Season After-School Programs
After-school programs are blooming this spring season! MCPS Community Schools in partnership with Superstar Soccer is providing programming to 75 students in all grade levels at no cost. Thanks to the donation from Fitzgerald Subaru of Rockville, we partnered with Kiddo and the Greater Washington Community Foundation to offer Spanish classes, Paint Club, and Running Club, to 48 students in kindergarten- second grade. Our community partner Master Method Academy is offering confidence and leadership in martial arts to 37 students in kindergarten- second grade. Starting the first week of May, we are partnering with Avanti Athletics to offer basketball to 24 students in grades 3-5. Our very own Ms. Miller and high school volunteers from Wheaton High School and Churchill High School will coach field hockey to 20 students in grades 3-5. We are thankful for all the community partners that are supporting the community by meeting the student and family after-school needs!
Family Nature & Wellness Workshops with Defensores de la Cuenca🌳
We partner with Defensores de la Cuenca to help families learn how nature and wellness is connected. There are four total workshops (grant funded), each one begins with families sharing a meal or snack. In the first workshop, Sve and Abel lead our families in learning about the closest watershed (right in our backyard; Turkey Branch) and the Chesapeake Bay watershed, at the end families created a map. During the second workshop families learned about the importance of native plants. Sve even noticed our pollinator garden located in front of our school 😊. Families created seed bombs which included seeds from native plants to plant in their homes, it was a little messy but fun! The third workshop focused on the importance of trees, especially native trees and the impact on the environment. Families also learned why spending time in nature is important for our well-being. Defensores de la Cuenca donated an Eastern Red Bud to our school! Families decided that it would be best to plant it in the courtyard next to the bench to provide shade. Students and their parents all had an opportunity to help plant the tree, it is a beautiful addition to our community. Three additional trees were donated for families to plant at home. We hope more families will join us for the last workshop where we will learn about forest bathing and its impact on our wellness! 🌲😌
Kindergarten Orientation
This year's kindergarten orientation had the theme of Pete the Cat, We Love our Cool School! Parents and students will met the school principal, Ms. Collins, kindergarten teachers, and other school staff members such as the school nurse Ms. Custer, parent community coordinators: Ms. Winder and Mr. Kassaye, community school liaison: Mrs. Castro, ELD teachers, and the school secretary Ms. Anaya. There were fun activities for children, such as a read aloud. Families had a chance to complete Kindergarten enrollment paperwork. Ms. Custer informed and checked vaccination forms. MCPS Community Schools funded a Bedtime in a Box for each family to help encourage bedtime routines, learning at home, and family engagement. Our community partner Kids Adventures informed families about the before and after school childcare service provided in our building. Families were also invited to our summer events. The orientation was an opportunity for children to look forward to coming to school. Parents and children can began to build an important partnership between home and school. Welcome Wildcats, we are excited for you to join our community!
