Notes from the Principal's Office
There are lots of exciting things happening at Newbury Elementary in the Month of October! From farm animals to the forest our students have been learning and exploring the world around them. We are so very lucky to live where we do!
This week is our first community coffee we hope that many of you will take the opportunity to come to the school and learn more about all of our building repairs, upgrades and improvements during our community coffee on Wednesday at 9:00. For many people this will be your first opportunity to visit the school since Covid.
Please consider joining us Tuesday October 17th at 1:30 for the official opening of our forest school and a land blessing by Chief Paul Bunnell of the Ko'sek Band of Abenaki. For more information please contact the school.
Wishing You Well,
~Loretta

From the Guidance Office
During H-Cubed: Harmony with Self, Harmony with Others, and Harmony with Nature; students at all grade levels spend time practicing the Positivity Project Character Strengths through movement, games, partner work, short readings or videos, teamwork and discussion. Recent topics have included Teamwork, where we practiced different group challenges such as “Amoeba Tag” and creating letters of the alphabet in groups of 5-6 students out on the tennis court. Students in grades 5-6 have begun eight lessons in Puberty Education. Nurse Jessi Bellois, PE teacher Cameron Prest, and School Counselor Scott O’Hearn team-teach the Puberty lessons during H-3 on Wednesday mornings. Students in grades 3 and 4 learned skills in anticipation of a day on the Ropes Course at Waits River Valley School. We practiced good stances for spotting others, and we worked on trust and teamwork skills (Italian Golf, Human Knot, Minefield and Trolley Walkers). Our day on the Ropes Course, Thursday, 10/12, was very successful: we enjoyed the “Whale Watch” activity, the “Rope Vine Swing” and the “Wild Woozy”. Thanks to WRVS for hosting our Newbury students on the Ropes Course this week!
During weekly Guidance/Health classes in the Library students at all grade levels continue to learn more about the 26 Character Strengths highlighted by our school-wide Positivity Project. Recent PowerSkills we have focused on include: Curiosity, Other Person Mindset: Being Present and Giving Others My Attention, Teamwork, and Open Mindedness. We start most classes with a “Mindful Moment”, practicing our mindful breathing, focusing, relaxation and self regulation skills. Short videos, texts and class discussions give students the opportunity to learn more about the Character Strengths and practice them in their lives. Mr. O’Hearn and Nurse Jessi Bellois have also begun teaching Care For Kids, a six-lesson K-2 sexual abuse prevention curriculum and We Care Elementary, a six lesson grades 3-4 curriculum. Both of these research-based curricula are from Prevent Child Abuse Vermont.
