Biography of Greta Garbo

Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, also know as Greta Garbo, was born in Stockholm, Sweden on September 8, 1905. Garbo grew up in Stockholm, being the youngest out of three. When Garbo was 13, she dropped out of school to care for her ill father, who two years later died. After her fathers death, which impacted her family, went to work at PUB and which later gained her modeling for two ads. Which led her to be "Greta" in Peter the Tramp. Soon after she was awarded with a full scholarship to the Academy of Royal Dramatic, which was the start of all popular Swedish actors. Following her role in Peter the Tramp was Garbo arriving in America at the age 19 in 1925.


Garbo was a mysterious women who kept everything to herself. One interview they asked about her family, she replied with "I was born. I had a mother and father. I went to school. What does it matter?" She was a private women who influenced Americans with her fashion and her non-stereotype actress. Garbo once threatened to leave MGM and return to Sweden, soon after her threat she landed her new contract for $270,000 per movie. By the time of her retirement she was in 28 movies. Overall she had 4 Oscar nominations, was voted by Time for the Best Silent Actress of the century and also nominated for 5 best actress awards by the National Board of Reviews. On April 15, 1990 the lifetime great actress died and was worth about $55 million.
