John Wesly Powell

John Wesley Powell was born March 24,1834, Mount Morris, NY. He died Sept. 23, 1902 in Haven ME. Powell was fourth child of Joseph Powell and his mom was named Mary Dean. He went to collage at Illinois Institute in Weston he enlisted in the union army and got shot in the right arm with a minie ball a lead ball with a cone head and two days later field surgeons amputated the arm. he became a professor in natural science Wesleyan University he took a teaching post at Illinois state University in 1866 he lead an example collecting trip he even climbed Pikes Peak and explored the Rocky mountains. He lead another expedition through the Colorado R. with ten men and charted the unexplored river.
