Makerspace Activities
Mr. Carey's students
worked in the Maker Lab building their protective egg cartons.
Coach Huff and Coach Rosson's students
built egg cars and tested them in the Library's Maker Lab.
The Lakeside Maker Club
built homemade "Little Bits" circuits and had a contest to see which group could build the most complex circuit using the most parts.
For the next session, the Maker Club
showed how they built their circuits.
Student Library Aides
finished coding a version of the 1980's video game Frogger in November using Agent Sheets from the University of Colorado.
A new feature in this year's Maker Club
is that each session opens with students showing off their maker creations. This is Tyler's binary calculator.
Arkansas Declaration of Learning Collaboration with Ms. Fierro's Art Classes
As a part of the Arkansas Declaration of Learning Program,
Ms. Fierro's 8th grade art students selected pieces of art from Crystal Bridges, the Central Arkansas Library System and the Diplomatic Relations Room in Washington D.C.
Students learned about the history
behind the pieces and selected works they would like to recreate.
Students then created paintings
based on original works. They repainted the originals to honor the sacrifices of veterans and their families that have served in Afghanistan and Iraq. These works made up the Counting the Costs: Honoring the Sacrifices of Today's Veterans and their families display.

Veterans visited the display
to view student's redone works based on classic paintings and sculptures from art museums around the United States.
Veterans also listened
to student created podcasts about their work and how it honors veterans and their families.
Students created QR codes
that could be scanned by visitors to the display to listen to the podcast.
Lakeside Book Club (L.B.C.) Begins!
The Lakeside Book Club
started in October.

gathered at lunch on Wednesdays this fall to read Eric Walters' dystopian novel the Rule of Three
One of the first sessions
featured a Skype visit with author Dr. Gretchen Bakke from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. She shared with us about the challenges of keeping the electrical power grid working to prepare us to read about how the world changed in the Rule of Three after the grid was knocked out.
Guest Speaker from Peru
Rocio Greenwood
A professor from the University of Arkansas shared with Lakeside about the culture and geography of her home nation Peru at lunch on October 14th.
More than 40 Lakeside students
attended her visit to Lakeside.
Students enjoyed
her presentation which was given in both English and Spanish.
Google Hangouts October/November
Mr. Stallings AP Human Geography class
visited with a class from Monterrey, Mexico about the NAFTA trade agreement and the upcoming American presidential election.

Ms. Smith's Spanish 2 class
visited with an Advanced Placement Spanish class from Lakeside Hot Springs High School to share their Day of the Dead projects and discuss how to prepare to take Advanced Placement Spanish in the future.

November 8th Lakeside Junior High Election Collaboration with Social Studies Teachers
The LJHS Social Studies Department
arranged booths so that students could vote. The booths were arranged by teacher.
Hundreds of LJHS students
viewed infographics about the positions of candidates on important issues on the Library televisions. The infographics were created by students from Mr. Stallings' and Ms. Wiens Government classes.
Students and faculty
voted for the presidential candidates using a Google Form.
Learning How to Play Cherokee Stickball
J.P. Johnson of the Cherokee Heritage Center
explained the rules and history of Cherokee Stickball. He also told us about how it has been used for conflict resolution.
J.P. Johnson taught about 50 library patrons
how to play Cherokee stickball.
Students
enjoyed learning how to play. Girls won first lunch, and boys won second lunch.

Native America Display
Honoring the contributions of Native Americans to North America.
Ms. Smith's Offrendas
Students created offrendas-shrines to remember their family and loved ones in honor of the Dia des Muertes. (Day of the Dead.)
Arkansas Declaration of Learning Paintings
were created by Ms. Fierro's 8th grade art students to honor the sacrifices of veterans and their families to keep our nation safe.
