Update For Intermediate Families From Principal Gene Hoskins
Intermediate School Begins Our One School, One Book Literacy Initiative This Week
This week we will begin our One School, One Book Initiative in the Intermediate School. The book we are reading together this year is Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. This book is about loneliness, building friendships, and the importance of not judging others. Students will be reading the book at school over the next three weeks. They will receive a reading schedule on a bookmark, so we will all be reading the same chapters on the same day. Teachers will be reading the same chapters with students during the school day, and we are hoping that your child can re-read those same chapters with family members at home each night. At the conclusion of the book, students will be able to take the book home to add to their home libraries. Please take the time to talk to your child about this special activity.
With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at Sodus Intermediate. Everyone – students, teachers, families and administrative staff – will be participating, and we will all reap the many benefits of this program. We have exciting plans to bring the story and its lessons to our students. These activities will encourage and reward attentive reading and listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. Throughout the program, everyone will be engaging in a shared conversation.
Staff and students will read the book in school, have the chance to participate in daily trivia questions, activities and discussions from May 10 – May 28. One School, One Book is a unique program in that children at all grade levels will all be listening to, and interacting with, the same book. It makes sound educational sense! As part of a balanced literacy program, reading professionals recommend that you read aloud on a daily basis. We believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. Reading aloud builds interest as well as fluency by modeling appropriate pace, intonation, and phrasing. We have selected a title that can be followed, understood, and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.
We hope everyone will be talking about the characters Opal, her dog Winn-Dixie, and the unique friendships they form with others. “When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about.” With your support, we can build a community of readers at Sodus Intermediate School.
Sincerely,
Gene Hoskins
Sodus Intermediate Principal
Intermediate School’s Third Universal Acknowledgement
Our Intermediate School MTSS Team sponsors three “universal” incentives or acknowledgments for the school year. They are called universal incentives because we set a school-wide goal, and if we achieve that school-wide goal then all students in the school get the incentive. Our first universal incentive was for reduction in referrals, our second was for attendance, and now our third (and last) universal incentive is for passing classes. We set the school-wide goal for the percentage of students passing all classes on their 30-week report cards. Students exceeded that goal, with 79% of all students in the Intermediate School passing all classes on their 3rd quarter report card. The incentive attached to achieving this goal is a portable reading light that clicks onto a book and has a flexible neck and small light. We are distributing these reading lights to students, along with a copy of “Because Of Winn Dixie” as part of our One School, One Book literacy program in the Intermediate School.

2020-2021 Intermediate School Talent Show Auditions
Our student Talent Show is a wonderful annual tradition in the Intermediate School. We typically have the Talent Show in December, but it was postponed this year due to COVOD restrictions. Our Student Council met with Talent Show Director Brenda Wren to brainstorm options for this year. We have decided that we are going to move forward with having our Talent Show this year on Friday. June 18. WE will be following all COVID restrictions that are in place on June 18, so the show will likely be viewed as a "live stream" event by students and parents. If restrictions allow, we would love to have some in the audience at the time of performance. Below is information about the Talent Show and auditions during lunches on May 25 - May 27.
