St. Jude's T-Shirt
We have received news that Mayfield High School is one of the TOP 10 fundraising schools for St. Jude! Since we are in the TOP 10, we have the opportunity to raise more money and compete for the TOP SPOT! To help us reach our goal of being the top fundraising school, we will be holding a “Show your love for St. Jude” fundraiser on February 14th at the varsity basketball game. We will be selling T-Shirts for $10 and anyone with a T-Shirt will be admitted to the game for free.
The cheerleaders will be visiting Gates Mills on Tuesday, February 11th and Thursday, February 13th. If you would like to purchase a shirt, please send your child with money to make the purchase during their lunch period. ($10 cash or check made payable to Mayfield High School) We hope you are able to support this very worthy cause and make an impact on these children’s’ lives. See you at the game!
Thank you,
Mayfield High School Varsity Cheerleaders

Also, please remember to return clothing items that have been borrowed from the clinic. We are running low on clothing items...especially girl pants. Thank you!
Safety First
Bus drivers have noticed an abundance of driver’s that are ignoring school bus STOP signs at some Mayfield City School pick up/drop off locations. To help with this issue and to ensure the safety of our students police cars will be stationed at certain pick up/drop off locations. Thanks for your help in keeping our students safe.
Health Update
PTC Information
The PTC is sponsoring Family Fun Night TONIGHT from 6:00-7:30 pm in the school gym. Mrs. Ravida will be calling Bingo and the PTC will provide pizza and drinks.
Valentine's Day is Friday, February 14th, and our Annual Pancake Breakfast will take place from 7:15 - 7:50 am in the school gym. All families are invited to attend. Classroom parties will take place in the afternoon. We ask all Room Parents to check into the office at 1:40 pm and then report to your designated classrooms. The PTC is providing a craft and snack.
The next PTC meeting is on April 1st at 6:30 pm in the Idea Lab. Most of our wonderful PTC members are going to be leaving at the end of this school year so now is a great time to get involved! If you are interested in participating on the board next year, please reach out to gatesmillspto@gmail.com
It's Cold Weather Time Again!
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to go outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal. We have a limited amount of clothing for students to change into should they get wet or muddy outside, so please consider sending in an extra set of clothing for your children.
Inside the Idea Lab
This week in Idea Lab we kicked off Black History Month with the Caldecott-winning book by Kwame Alexander and Kadir Nelson, The Undefeated. We watched a video of Kwame Alexander reading the book and the students loved hearing this beautiful poem in the author’s own voice.
Third, fourth, and fifth grade were then given the option to watch an educational video with the scientific explanation of why we see the Northern Lights, which many students have been very interested in since we saw a picture of them in a book we read a few weeks ago. This is a great example of the kind of flexibility allowed by personalized learning. Each class was given the choice to decide if they wanted to watch the video, and all three classes overwhelmingly voted to watch it. So, even though we have moved on to new genres and subject areas, we continue to learn more about what interests us.
This week our featured books focused on the themes of love (for Valentine’s Day), presidents (for Presidents’ Day), and famous African Americans. Our genre of the month for February is Biographies, and our Dewey section of the month will be 398.2, Fairy Tales. In Kindergarten, we also had 100th Day books to choose from, as well as books by our February featured authors and illustrators: Norman Bridwell, Russell Hoban, Laura Ingalls Wilder, David Wiesner, Megan McDonald, Mark Teague, and others.
Our next library day will be Wednesday, February 12. Below I have provided the link to an article in the Washington Post about the importance of parents reading with their children even after they can read to themselves. I hope you enjoy it, and keep reading with your children!
