Our Purpose

Arts education, which includes visual arts, music, drama, and media arts, is an important part of a well-rounded education. This newsletter serves to highlight the amazing work with the arts being done by school districts within our county.

Arts Education Throughout Kings County

Lemoore High Choir Annual Dinner Show

Pioneer Cubism and Black Artists

Students at Pioneer Middle School have been studying non-objective fragmentation and abstractions by turning their favorite cartoon characters into Cubism pieces that mimic the style and feel of Pablo Picasso's work. They have also been celebrating the lives and achievements of famous Black artists like Faith Ringgold, Lois Mailou Jones, and Kehinde Wiley and Ms. McCaslin will be putting up an exhibit of master copies/recreations of their iconic works of art in the school library.

Akers Durer Artwork

Akers students have been working on printmaking techniques including relief block printing, collograph, and intaglio. The focus of the unit was on the Renaissance artist, Albrecht Durer. Students produced a drawing and turned it into a print.

JC Montgomery Partners with Fresno Skateboard Salvage

Students at JC Montgomery have been working on a community service project, transforming salvaged skateboards into original artwork, which will be auctioned by Fresno Skateboard Salvage. The nonprofit will use the proceeds to purchase skateboarding equipment of children who cannot afford their own.

Hanford High School Lanterns and Tattoo Designs

Students in Mr. Brauckman's Arts courses at Hanford High School created lanterns in their Ceramics class and tattoo designs using watercolor and India ink in their Art I class.

Hanford West High School Choir

Hanford West High had two students qualify for California All State High School Honor Choir. Soprano, Madelyn Campos and Tenor, Dustin Mayberry were able to work under nationally renowned conductors, Dr. Sablan and Dr. Redding. After two full days of rehearsals, they performed at the Saroyan Theatre on February 19, 2022.

Corcoran High School Abstract Sculptures

Students at Corcoran High School created abstract sculptures expressing social issues faced by teenagers. Student Faith Gomez has also been working at home to create digital artwork.

Sierra Pacific

Sierra Pacific students created colorful animals using various linework in Mr. Sower's class.

Central Mark Making Skills

Students at Central Elementary School and Stratford Elementary School used mark making skills to draw to a variety of musical strands in combined art and music lesson.

VAPA Arts Resources for Educators

The VAPA committee has compiled a list of resources for arts educators.

The Kings County Office of Education VAPA website has resources and information about the arts in Kings County.

Next KCOE Arts Update

Kings County Office of Education will release our next arts update in March 2022. Submissions may be sent to Liz Norris. Districts and sites are responsible for verifying that photos may be publicly released. Photos should be submitted in groupings of three due to the gallery format of S'more. Videos of live performances may also be accepted.
