What We're Studying and Learning...
Reading: We will continue to work on author's purpose this month. While we are closely studying the purpose of a piece of writing, we're going to spend some time looking at context clues. This concept was introduced briefly in second grade but we'll be spending more time learning how to figure out what words mean when reading.
Writing: We are putting our poems together in our poetry folders and Everything Notebooks. We'll also spend some time working on writing paragraphs so we don't lose the skill of indenting and writing with a main idea/topic sentence. While we're at it, we'll work on prefix and suffix words, dictionary skills, and responding to poetry.
Grammar/Spelling/Handwriting: Everyone is doing a great job of keeping up with spelling in the classroom. This time around everyone has prefix words that require dictionary work. It's a great real world application to several skills we've been working on in class.
We are trying to cover at least three new cursive letters each week (o, w, and b this week). We are also working our way through daily language reviews that cover a range of topics.
Math: Students are wrapping up geometry and beginning a study of weight and volume. We'll be using customary and metric measurements to learn about how many ounces are in a pound, how many pounds are in a ton, and what is the difference between liters and milliliters.
Social Studies/Science: We're deep into animal adaptations right now. Students really enjoyed looking at pictures of animals camouflaged or mimicing other animals in order to survive.
