Bearcat Baseball News
The Bearcats finally got back on the field this week after rain, snow, ice, and extreme temperatures delayed Opening Day.
Jeb Bartle took the mound at Hoover Friday. He held the talented Bucs, ranked #1 in 7A, down and the offensive took advantage of some Hoover miscues to take a 6-2 lead into the 5th inning.
Seniors Austin Hurt and Grant Morrison were both great in relief and the Cats secured the win. Will Bradberry, Hayden Stancil, Hunter Brooks, and Paxton Ponder all had key hits with RBI’s while Brennen Norton, Max Dueland, and Jake Dueland added hits to chip in to the offensive production.
Final Score: Cullman 8- Hoover 5
Saturday 2/20/21
Game 1 vs Alexandria at Gadsden City
Cullman’s offense exploded in game 1 verses Alexandria, putting 7 runs on the board in the first two innings. Hayden and Max Dueland each picked up hits in the 1st inning to give the Cats a 3-0 lead. Hayden continued to dominate the Alexandria offense and the Bearcats poured in 4 more runs in the 2nd inning. Zac Edwards, Max, and Hunter Brooks all had hits in the inning before the major damage was done by Hayden on a deep drive to right field that ended up as a triple.
At the end of the game, the offense tallied 13 runs and Weston Horton made in his Bearcat debut on the mound. After a tough luck inning in the 6th, he responded well in the 7th by striking out the side.
Final Score: Cullman 13- Alexandria 7
Game 2 vs Gadsden City
The Cats took the first loss of the season Saturday night in a back and forth game that went 9 innings before the Titans finally secured the win on a sacrifice fly to score the winning run and complete the 5-4 win over Cullman.
Max Dueland was the starting pitcher and held the Gadsden City offense at bay, once working out of a bases loaded jam with no outs without allowing a run. After some severe cramping, he had to be removed in the 4th inning. Kaleb Heatherly relieved Max and was good for the Cats on his first appearance on the mound this season.
Both teams fought and had opportunities to score but were turned away by good, timely defensive plays.
With 2 outs and nobody on in the 7th inning, Brennen Norton reached base after being hit by a pitch for the third time of the game. Max re-entered the game and singled, then Hunter Brooks doubled to deep right center field to tie the game. He was left stranded at 3rd to end the 7th. Unfortunately the Bearcats could not push across another run before the Titans scratched a run across in the 9th, running the Cats record to 2-1 on the young season.
