SAFE ZONE - Bullying, Harassment, and Slurs Not Tolerated
August 31, 2020
Dear Alamo Families,
We are so appreciative of all the support from you as we navigate distance learning. Your patience, kind words of appreciation, and understanding encourage us to conquer our challenges.
Our preference is to teach in-person as we know that is the most effective way to connect with students for learning, but we must be safe. The waiver for in-person learning for counties on the watch list is for grades K-5. More guidance is available; here are the safety criteria that must be completed in advance and submitted as one package:
- Posted reopening plan (SRVUSD website)
- Cleaning and disinfection (train staff)
- Cohorts (fixed membership for students in all activities, including lunch and recess)
- Egress and movement within the school
- Face coverings and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
- Health screening for students and staff (for symptoms and separation of ill students and staff)
- Healthy hygiene practices (handwashing is part of daily routines)
- Contact tracing (identify and train staff for reporting cases)
- Physical distancing
- Staff training and family education
- Testing of students and staff (need protocol for rapid testing if exposed, and routine testing of staff)
- Identified triggers for distance learning (data points for returning to distance learning for everyone)
- Communication Plans (to the community when a person is tested positive while maintaining privacy)
The district continues to identify strategies to fulfill the requirements.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Salazar

FEATURING OUR STAFF
ART TEACHER: Ms. Carol Berkowitz
This is my 6th year teaching art at Alamo - started as a volunteer then Ed Fund created the position for me.
- Taught middle school for 12 years.
- My son went to Alamo K-5th.
- I was on Ed Fund for 4 years.
- I love to paint - have a studio in my garage.
- People may see me around the neighborhood on my green bicycle - when the weather cooperates.
In Art Class we learn about:
- The 7 Elements of Art (line, shape, color, form, value, texture & space) with a fun song & hand jive. I'll email you an old 25-second video of 1st graders singing the 7 the Elements of Art - these kids are now your 5th graders. I began teaching art there when today's 5th graders were in Kindergarten.
- How to use different materials and media and techniques
- Draw, paint, color, & sculpt animals, landscapes, & portraits both real and imaginary.
- Famous art and artists
- Distance learning may include the use of found materials/ upcycling to create art.
- Art kit contains different types of paper, oil pastels, crayons, permanent marker, watercolor paints, and paintbrushes
PE TEACHER: Mr. Jason Cherry (New addition to the staff)
Hi Mustangs!
My name is Mr.Cherry, and I am excited to be BACK at Alamo School. I graduated from Alamo school and enjoyed every minute of being there and especially the Hoedown. I am still in contact with my kindergarten and first-grade teacher, who was excited to find out that I was back. I graduated from Arizona State, thinking I would end up running the family business but decided that wasn't for me after five years and went back to school. I am currently a basketball coach for Cal high's Freshman basketball team and a long time tennis coach. I have always been someone who loved teaching sports as well as the life skills students acquire while playing. I have two dogs that I often walk, and enjoy spending quality time with my family, including training my nephew for basketball since he is a junior at Cal high. My passion has always been to help make an impact on students' physical and mental health, and I do that by creating lasting relationships with them. This school year, P.E. will be looking a little different, but it is my goal to help give students the tools and knowledge they need to be able to engage in quality P.E. activities on their own. I can't wait to get to know everyone and love that Alamo school is small enough for me to re-enter the community seamlessly.
