PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Bonny Slope Families,
Welcome to 2023! We are excited to be back in school after Winter Break and are digging into our learning goals as we finish the first semester. Students are busy learning and demonstrating their knowledge and teachers are busy assessing and setting new goals for students.
This month we launched Bobcat Academy, supporting students with tutoring Wednesdays after school. Thank you BSCO for funding this amazing program! Just this week 5th grade took a field trip to Rood Bridge Park to release their tank-raised salmon fry and learn more about supporting healthy environments. We are planning more field trips to connect our learning with the world around us.
As we continue to navigate winter weather, please help by ensuring students are ready to roll and unload on the passenger side of your vehicle upon arrival. This not only saves time, but keeps kids much safer!
Our staff continue to learn about and support student identity and inclusion. During Professional Development time, we are learning the history and culture of Native American peoples. We learned that Bonny Slope students speak over 36 different languages and we are sharing the love and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we honor him with Monday’s holiday.
I look forward to seeing many of you at next week’s Principal Chat and Winter BSCO meeting.
My Best,
Cary Meier
Principal
Bonny Slope Family Survey
Thank you to everyone who has responded to our family survey! Information we receive from the survey is valuable in helping us plan for the needs of our school community. We appreciate your positive feedback as well! So far fewer that 25% of families have responded so we know we need to hear from a lot more.
We really appreciate your time and your support! Thank you
NURSE'S CORNER
Let's talk about puberty!
I believe that when we take the fear and mystery out of normal human development, we empower our kids. We empower them to be self-confident and self-advocating.
When is the best time to talk about puberty? Ideally, before puberty onset. You are the best person to talk to your child about changes that will occur and are occurring in their body! Encourage your child to talk about their feelings about those changes and to bring their questions to you.
What if I don't have all the answers? Don't be afraid to get help!
- Talk to your pediatrician.
- Get age-appropriate books to read with your child. (Your public library is a great resource!). My favorite books for elementary age children are:
- The Care and Keeping of You 1: The Body Book for Girls (great for girls ages 8-10)
- The Care and Keeping of You 2: The Body Book for Older Girls (great for girls ages 9-11)
- Guy Stuff: The Body Book for Boys by Dr. Cara Natterson (great for boys ages 9-12)
- For access to multiple videos, blog entries, and other resources, check out GIRLology and GUYology at https://girlology.com/
SAVE THE DATE
The Fourth Annual Community Conversations Around Race will be held on March 8th at Southridge High School.
PANCAKE BREAKFAST
One of Bonny Slope's most anticipated – and delicious – events is returning in February. The 5th grade class will be hosting a fluffy-buttery-syrup-soaked pancake breakfast for the school and community to help fund Outdoor Science School adventures.
The breakfast will be held on Saturday, February 11th from 7:30-10:30 am in the school cafeteria. After Winter Break, look for communications about ticket sales and entry for raffle prizes. You'll also have the opportunity to "Sponsor a staff member breakfast" to reward our amazing staff members with the sweetness they bring to our kids each day.
If you would like to donate, provide sponsorship to the event, or contribute to our raffle please reach out to Erin O'Roak at pancakes@bonnyslopebsco.org.
2023 AUCTION & GALA
New year, new auction. What’s the deal?
The Auction & Gala is a formal event on Saturday, April 22nd that will include a sit down dinner, drinks, a silent and live auction, opportunity to purchase unforgettable future community and family party events, raffle prizes, dancing and of course fun! This is a prom with a purpose with all proceeds benefiting the school. All Bonny Slope Elementary families and friends are encouraged to attend. Tickets will be sold starting in February. Plan your outfit, book those babysitters, and get ready to party like it's PROM!
