Valentines Day Protocol

In order to adhere to public health protocols, we are requiring that Valentines Day cards be brought to school no later than 12:00 p.m. on February 10th so that they can be quarantined for 48 hours before being handed out on Friday the 12th. To maintain the 2 meter distancing, teachers will be handing out the valentines on behalf of students while the students remain in their seats.

Any cards arriving after February 10th will not be handed out until after the weekend.

The same guidelines will apply for sending Valentines Day treats. They must be at school no later than the 10th at noon and they MUST be individually wrapped and packaged in a commercial kitchen or factor (no homemade treats).

Thank you for you cooperation in making these accommodations so that we can still have some Valentines Day cheer.

Literacy Month

Big picture

At Southwood School we focus on literacy every month. However, the month of February is known as “Literacy Month”, so we want to take time during February to do some extra literacy activities to help promote the joys of reading, writing and playing games that promote literacy.

Starting at the beginning of February, the students will have the opportunity to do the Literacy Challenge - Strive for 25. Students are asked to try to complete all of the 25 literacy activities on the challenge sheet in the month of February. They can check off each activity square as they do them at home. Once all of the literacy activities on the sheet have been completed, the students can return their parent signed sheet to the office by Monday, March 1 for a chance to win a prize of a family game (one prize per grade level).

Throughout the month of February, each classroom can choose from a variety of literacy based activities to do. Some of the activities include: a cohort teacher swap, doing a “Book Buzz”, making book recommendations, exploring the literacy link on the Southwood website,

writing class poems and name a few!

We are looking forward to Literacy month getting started!

We are pleased to announce that we have extended our partnership with TumbleBooks for the remainder of the school year which allows for full access to their K-6 library of books.

Winter Fun DAZE

Despite the many changes we have been forced to make, the staff at Southwood School are working to maintain some of the fun events we enjoy each school year. This year, although with some adjustments, we are planning to host Winter Fun Daze for our students. During the week of February 16 to 19, students will be treated to winter activities which include tobogganing and of course treats. If the event has to be rescheduled due to cold weather, we will plan on having it the week after, February 23 to 26, 2021.

Students in grades three and four will be transported to Abe's Hill where they will be able to toboggan with their classmates. Students in grades K-2 will toboggan here on our nature playground hill during their winter activity slots of time. All students will receive a treat and drink as part of our celebration. Please note that all food items and drinks will be items that have been prepared/individually wrapped in a commercial kitchen or factory.

Unfortunately we will not be able to have parent volunteers to support our activities as we have in the past. Hopefully next year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child's teacher.

Message from the Library

Please remember to return all outstanding library books to the Learning Commons. Your child will not be able to sign out a new book until their previous ones have been returned. If you aren't sure what your child currently has signed out you can check their account on Destiny by logging in at
