Setting Goals & Sticking With Them!
Ahhh, it’s a brand new year. Full of promise and fresh starts! We always start a new project with the best of intentions, but it’s easy to quickly fall off the wagon. Life gets in the way, and slowly but surely we end up back at square one.
Here are a few tips to help you Set and Stick to your goals this year:
Create S.M.A.R.T. Goals!
The acronym S.M.A.R.T. means Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-sensitive.
Specific:
Your goal should be clear and specific, this way you can focus your efforts and be truly motivated to achieve it.
Measurable:
It's important to have measurable goals, so that you can track your progress and stay motivated. Tracking progress helps you to stay focused, meet your deadlines, and feel the excitement of getting closer to achieving your goal.
Achievable:
Your goal also needs to be realistic and achievable to be successful. In other words, it should get you out of your comfort zone, but remain possible.
Realistic:
The root word of realistic is “real.” A goal has to be something that we can reasonably make “real” or a “reality” in our lives. There are some goals that are simply not realistic. You have to be able to say, even if it is a tremendously stretching goal, that yes, indeed, it is entirely realistic—that you could make it. This is in no way to say it shouldn’t be a big goal, but it must be realistic.
Timely:
Every goal should have a timeframe attached to it. One of the powerful aspects of a great goal is that it has an end—a time in which you are shooting to accomplish it. You may even want to break down a big goal into different parts of measurement and timeframes—that is OK. Set smaller goals and work them out in their own time!
