COVID-19 Closure Update

Sycamore Community Schools - May 22, 2020

Happy Summer Break!!

It's A Wrap! Sycamore Schools 2019-2020 School Year

Summer Remote Learning Begins in June

As communicated in last week’s newsletter, we will be offering some limited remote learning opportunities in our summer school program for students in grades K-8.

Intervention will be provided in reading and math to fill gaps for students that are in need of more targeted skill instruction. English language instruction will also be available. Each of these aforementioned services will be provided by teacher recommendation only and will be free of charge.

Enrichment programming will be provided for those looking to stay engaged in some more advanced problem solving and/or to enhance their creative writing skills. Our Greene 101 and Junior High Launch transition programs are currently on hold until we know more about state reopening directives. Sessions will be held as follows:

Grades K-8:

  • June 8-July 10*
  • Monday-Thursday with Friday office hours

Missed Your Item Pickup Date?

If you were unable to stop by your child's school on May 18-20, there is still an opportunity to pick up personal items and drop off materials. Your child's school has sent additional information about how to set up an appointment to pick up items. Please contact your principal via email for more information.

Special Services

Thank you parents for your patience, persistence, and collaborative mindset as you worked with your child’s special education team to support delivery of special education services remotely. Although very challenging, we have experienced success with many students. We are also aware that many students continued to struggle with the extended closure of school buildings and loss of routine schedule and services. As stated in previous communications, once school resumes, your child’s IEP teams will convene, including you as parents, to consider the impact the school closure had on the skills that are outlined within your child’s IEP. Teams will consider any skills lost and determine how to move forward with services to address the loss of skills.

Parenting During A Pandemic

On Wednesday, May 20, members of our school-based treatment team from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital presented on “Parenting During a Pandemic.” The presentation highlighted topics such as brain development, typical responses our children may demonstrate to the current situation, and tips to help our kids mitigate these difficult times. Additionally, the presentation highlighted when to recognize additional help or support may be needed.

We know schedules don’t always align with our events, so we made sure to record our presenters. You can find the presentation below.

Whether you participated in the live event, or watch the recording, we would love your feedback. This helps us to plan future events to meet the needs of our students and their families. Our feedback survey can be found here.

Planning for Fall 2020

Sycamore Community Schools is committed to engaging students in learning while keeping their health and safety a top priority during the COVID-19 crisis. The district is collaborating with state and local health officials as we consider every possible scenario to safely provide educational opportunities in Fall 2020. With the uncertainty of this developing situation in mind, we are carefully evaluating a number of options for the start of next year, including complete remote learning and a combination of remote and in-school learning. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we consider the potential impact on the education, services, and lives of our students, staff, and families.

We will be sending out a survey regarding next Fall during the week of June 5 to all families. Please continue to check your primary email address as well as the district’s social media and website for more information as our plans are solidified during Summer Break. We will scale back our weekly communications to bi-weekly beginning next week.
