Information on Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde (H2CO) is a chemical found in some hair products such as, hairspray and some hair smoothing products have this chemical in them. Formaldehyde can be very harmful. If Salon owners want to use products with formaldehyde in them they have to follow the requirements of OSHA'S formaldehyde and hazard communication standards.

Health Effects of Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a colorless gas it can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing. It can also cause asthma attacks and cancer.

Ways you can be exposed to Formaldehyde

You can be exposed to formaldehyde if you breathe it into your lungs, if it gets into your eyes, or if it is contained in a product that gets onto your skin. You can also be exposed accidentally if you touch your face, eat food, or drink after using a product with formaldehyde without washing your hands first. It can irritate the eyes and nose, and cause coughing and wheezing. Formaldehyde can cause allergic reactions of the skin, eyes, and lungs such as asthma-like breathing problems and skin rashes and itching. When formaldehyde is in a product that gets sprayed into the eyes, it can damage the eyes and cause blindness.

History on formaldehyde

Formaldehyde was first reported in 1859 by Alexander Mikhailovich Butlerov when he attempted to form methylene glycol, but formaldehyde wasn’t really identified until 1868, when August Wilhelm Von Hofmann, who was a professor of chemistry and a director at the laboratory of the University of Berlin, set out to create both the structure and identity of formaldehyde. The method that Hoffman used to identify formaldehyde laid the foundation for the modern formaldehyde manufacturing process.

Formaldehyde is found virtually everywhere, indoors and out.Even in small amounts formaldehyde can cause serious health problems.Formaldehyde can increase a persons sensitivity to other chemicals that were never a problem in the past.Symptoms of low-level exposure include; runny nose, sore throat, cough, dermatitis, sleeping difficulties, headache, fatigue, breathing difficulties, sinus irritation, chest pain, frequent nausea, bronchitis, and decreased lung capacity.Formaldehyde is also a metabolic product of normal living cells.
