What is the California Healthy Youth Act?
The California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA) requires that all students receive Comprehensive Sex Education and HIV/AIDS Prevention education once in middle school and once in high school. There are very specific criteria for what must be included in that unit of instruction. Lancaster School District will continue to provide this unit of instruction through 7th grade science teachers. For more information please click on the resources provided.

Do you give Group/Table Points? Try Literacy Points!
Literacy Points can be a fun alternative or addition to the standard table points. You might choose to award Literacy Points during a certain portion of a lesson or throughout the day.
The example below is just one way it can be done, but you can change it up however you want. They could be based on specific skills or standards, whatever you decide!

Are you looking for something to help your students reflect on their choices?
This could even be used to discuss character behavior in literature or historical figures...

New and Rising Star Teacher Feature
Meet Tami Lee from Piute!
This month we would like to shine the spotlight on Tami Lee...
Renee Rubio and Michelle Lambeth, our Induction Facilitators, have been so impressed with Tami's classroom and her willingness to learn and try new things! She continues to impress her mentors again and again!
We are very proud of you! Keep up the great work!
A little about how Tami got into the profession...
"I actually had never wanted to be a teacher. 5 years ago I began subbing as a way to earn extra money. My plan was to become an anthropologist. I received my BA in Cultural Anthropology, online. One of my first subbing jobs was a long term job, where there was no teacher of record. After this, I really didn't want to be a teacher (middle school in East Palmdale). I did, however, decide to focus my anthropology career on education, hence my MAED focusing on Cultural Responsive Education. I have always loved watching and studying different cultures, and this was very interesting not only in classrooms, but also in the teacher's lounge! A year later, I returned to that same middle school for a 2-week job. As soon as I saw my old students, I realized how much I missed them. The deal was sealed when I needed a full-time job to support my kids and I realized this was all I was really qualified for. From day 1, I knew this was where I was meant to be. I love working with these kids and helping them be able to connect what they are learning into their everyday lives. I love seeing how the different cultures mix in a classroom, as well as outside the classroom. I love the feeling you get when a student begins to see results for their hard work. I love to be there for them in their hard times and do what I can to help. I teach because these kids need stability in their life, and I can be that. I teach because I want to help them prepare to be a benefit to their culture and our overall society. I teach so I can set an example for these kids, to show them their opinions and choices matter.
Those moments when students confide in you are some of my favorites. Those moments when you can show them that their hard work does pay off. I love the relationship that I build with my students, it makes such a difference. It helps them open up so much more to me and I get a chance to learn so much more about them. Which of course helps me find a way to help them connect to the lesson better. This is one of the reasons why I love teaching at Piute. These kids hunger for that kind of relationship. They need it and are searching for it, even if they are doing it subconsciously. I love the extra challenge of building the relationship with the "tough" kids. It takes a different tactic, but it works. It is hard to explain why I love Piute, I just love my students; including the ones who are not actually mine, but the friends of mine. I love that so many feel comfortable in my room and comfortable talking to me about random things."
