- This lesson can be scaled for any grade level but ties in nicely with grade 3 curriculum

Objectives:
- To find connection with the struggles of marginalized cultural groups.
- To build a social and emotional connection with others in the class by participating in integrated arts/academic activity.
- To gain and show deeper understanding of historical and cultural events by interpreting portions of the book, Crossing Bok Chitto, musically.
- To delve further into social justice topics already present in the elementary curriculum by using arts integrated lesson.
Agenda (Activities)
- Gesture Names (5-10 min)
- Body Percussion (5 min)
- Racquetballs (5-10 min)
- Solfege singing w/ barred instruments (10-15 min)
- Read Crossing Bok Chitto (20 min)
- Set portions of the story to music (30-60 min)
- Critique/Edit/Recompose (remainder ~30-60 min)
Materials:
- Book
- Solfege Syllables (DO-RE-MI-SO-LA) on board
- Index cards with key phrases from the book (email me for pdf)
- Racquetballs
- Barred Instruments set to C-Pentatonic Scale (F bars and B bars removed)
- Drums
- Other small percussion as needed
Areas of the Room:
A. Large movement area in center
B. Reading area to one side
C. Barred instruments (xylophones, etc.) and drums to other side
