Friday Reminders
Thank you for all the time and work you put into preparing for and holding the parent-teacher conferences over the past few weeks. If you have any families that missed their conference or have not yet scheduled time with you, please reach out via phone or catch the family at pick-up/drop-off to communicate the importance of scheduling a time to meet together.
Please take the time to review each section below to ensure you are up to date for the week ahead. Also, don't forget to follow-up with families who have not yet signed up for parent-teacher conferences!
Updates:
- Help us prepare for our upcoming board meeting and share your Flexible Seating classroom information. Due Mon., 9/30
- RTI Plans due on Mon., 9/30. Once your RTI plans are cleared, Amy will notify you that your grade level team is ready to begin RTI and you will begin receiving your IA support.
- How are you celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in your classroom/grade level? Do you have any whole site recommendations? See some resources below. Provide your feedback in the link below so we can share with our community.

Flexible Seating Input Form for School Board Presentation!
Due to Lisa via email or in mailbox no later than Mon., 9/30/19
As a school team, we decided to present at our annual school board presentation regarding the value of flexible seating. Your input is critical to the success of the presentation even if you are not presenting at the board meeting. The attached form will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. While some of the questions can be answered in collaboration with your colleagues, the information will be more diverse and reflective of our overall use if you answer the majority of the questions independently.
When you open the form, you will be asked to make a copy. You can then type directly on the document or you may print it out an hand write on it. You can submit it in hard copy or electronically.
If you are using flexible seating, I will expect a response from you regarding its use in your classroom. Your feedback is appreciated and will ensure a comprehensive and diverse presentation on the value of flexible seating at Jensen Ranch. I have already begun taking pictures as I stop by your classrooms. If you have a special lesson or opportunity for me to observe how your students are using flexible seating during instruction, please let me know and I will come by to take pictures and/or video for our presentation.

COST Referral Process
COST (Coordination of Services Team) meeting time slots are now available! They will occur on the 2nd Mondays and 4th Tuesdays of each month in Room 11. Our first COST meeting will be on Monday Sept. 9th.
COST is the main point of entry for all (non-crisis) academic and non-academic support services. We work as a team to link students to academic, health and family support services.
The COST referral process begins with a written referral and can be made by a teacher, parent or other staff member. Click here to access the COST Referral Form . This form can also be found in the Staff Lounge to the right of the door on the wall as well as in the Google Drive>Shared Drives>Jensen Ranch Staff folder.
Print out the form and complete all boxes as best you can, then drop off into the yellow COST folder in Vinita's mailbox. Be sure to save a copy for your files.
After you submit a referral, the team will respond to you within the week via email to inform you of your COST meeting time. At that meeting, we'll have the opportunity to discuss your concerns about your student's needs and come up with strategies. We'll do our best to stay on time, and we ask that you're prompt as we want to respect everyone's schedules.
Here are friendly reminder steps that may be taken prior to referral:
- Teacher has consulted with last year's teacher to consider effective interventions utilized.
- Teacher has discussed concerns 1:1 with student, as appropriate.
- Teacher has contacted the family to discuss observations and consider strategies.
- Teacher has attempted various Tier 1 efforts or interventions in the classroom. Please document these on the COST form.

Friday Flag Helpers - Gr. 5
Grade 5 teachers, please select 8 students each who will fill the roles listed on the link below.
Thank you 4th grade for selecting your students this week. There are 8 roles, so as a grade-level team, decide the best way to select 8 students from the three classrooms. 5th grade will be the first week of October. I would encourage you to use this as a way to do some personal bucket-filling for kids who may need some positive recognition.
Add Student Names by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. If you, as the teacher would like to notify the parents, you are welcome to do so since you are selecting the student.

We will reevaluate our nominations for Session 2 in December and the 2nd Session will begin in January.
Prodigy Math Online Resource
We have been looking for easy to use math resources to support our students in math practice both at school and at home. Prodigy Math is a free program (there is a membership side but it is absolutely not required). The program supports students in Grades 1-6. K teachers may still be interested to support higher-level learners in your classrooms (or your own children!).
Prodigy is an online math resource and practice tool that is based out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The curriculum is adaptive to the California Common Core Standards to support the students in your classroom. I've included some links for you to review to gain a better general understanding of the program and to get you thinking about how this could be a resource for you and your students as we begin the year's focus on developing on Math Essential Standards and supporting our students with engaging math practice.
I would like to invite you to a site webinar training by Prodigy Staff that will take place on Friday, October 11 from 1-2 p.m. in the science room. This webinar will walk you through the ways Prodigy can benefit our students and how the resources and tools can provide valuable data to support our students.

Updated Board Policies
Please review the updated Board Policies and ensure you are familiar with the changes.
There are major changes to BP 5132 Dress and Grooming. We used to be very nitty-gritty about what clothing students can and cannot wear. This new districtwide policy is much more general and it is focused on equity. We are no longer policing short length, shoulder strap widths, among other things. Again, you are to review and be familiar with the changes.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but this is a valuable resource of great teaching videos for demonstrating parts of Writers' Workshop.

If you don't already have an account, it is free and then you have access to EL materials that go with writers workshop curriculum as well as videos and assessments with rubrics, etc.
Materials Update
Eureka Math Module Assessments are being delivered for the entire school year. When your grade has arrived, you will be notified.
- 1st-grade module assessments are in the office for pick-up.
Measure G Updates
Jensen Measure G Work:
- Our current playground project: Asphalt will be added around the immediate sides to reduce dirt/dust this weekend and the playground will reopen on Monday!
- Slurry and repaint blacktop (Thanksgiving or Winter Break)
- Proposed Library, Resource Room and staff room/office reconfiguration to increase function and improve the use of space (summer 2021)
- Painting-new exterior color scheme (next summer)
- Staff parking lot solar array/panels in parking spaces closest to the school.
- We are exploring the possible rerouting of the fire lane further from the buildings and the possibility of adding an additional portable to allow flexibility in space for programs like RTI/MTSS. (summer 2021)

Interpreter Services
To request an in-person interpreter, fill out the online Interpreter Request form (below) with the required information to submit your interpreter request.
A minimum of two weeks notice is needed for an "in-person" interpreter. On occasion, an interpreter can be found on shorter notice, but that is generally not the norm and should not be expected. An email will be sent on your behalf to request an interpreter within 24 hours of the first workday after your request has been received. You will be included on that email and will be notified via email when your interpreter request has been filled.

Hispanic Heritage Month Resources
September 15 began national recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. As with the recognition of all groups, we will take some time to recognize the culture, history, and contributions of Latinos today and throughout history. Hispanic Heritage Month is the period to recognize the contributions, culture, and history of Hispanic Americans and Latinos from across the globe.

Thank you to our staff, students, and families as they participate in activities to build awareness within our school community. As October comes to a close, we are going to be learning about Dia de los Muertos, which some students may be familiar with from the animated movie Coco. If you are interested in supporting these school activities, let me know. We are going to have an ofrenda in Room 9 on November 1 and I'm working with PTA to host a Coco Family Movie Night on Fri., Nov. 1-Dia de los Muertos.

NON-JENSEN STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
Click Here to list the names/information of any regular non-Jensen student volunteers that you are expecting to help in your classroom during our school day. While on campus, the student will be under your direct supervision and it is expected that you have been in communication with the student’s family and that they know the student is on our campus to volunteer.

High-Quality Education
Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) provides an excellent education that prepares students to graduate ready for competitive colleges and 21st-century careers. This is possible thanks to strong academic programs, excellent teachers, high-performing students and a supportive community.
Planning for the Future
As we look to the future, we know we cannot rely on the state to provide the level of funding our schools need. Our District is among the lowest funded in Alameda County and has already made $1.8 million in ongoing cuts in the past two years. Additionally, the Bay Area is one of the most expensive places to live in the country, and many of our teachers live right here in Castro Valley. By retaining and attracting the highest quality teachers, we can improve student achievement and continue providing an excellent education to students.
Potential Local Funding Measure
To provide dedicated funding for our schools to support programs and teachers, the Castro Valley Unified School District Board of Education is considering placing a local parcel tax measure on an upcoming ballot. Although no final decisions have been made, a measure may cost $96 per parcel per year and generate $1.5 million annually for six years.
Funds from a measure could:
- Retain and attract highly qualified teachers
- Preserve strong academic programs in reading, writing, science, technology, engineering, arts and math
- Prepare students for college and careers
- Support the health and well-being of all students
- Keep schools clean and well-maintained
Fiscal Accountability Provisions of Potential Local Measure
- All revenue from the measure would be spent right here in our District to support local schools and could not be taken away by the State
- A citizens’ oversight committee and annual audits would ensure that all funds are spent as promised
- No funds could go to administrator salaries
- Seniors would be eligible for an exemption from the cost
