Affect of Eggs Circumference
Due to the Osmosis of Different Liquids
Background and research:
- osmosis is a process that molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one equalizing the concentrations on each side of the membrane.
- Passive transport is a movement of biochemicals and other atomic or molecular substances across membranes. Unlike active transport, it does not require an input of chemical energy, being driven by the growth of entropy of the system.
- active transport is the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration, assisted by enzymes and requiring energy.
Hypothesis:
if you place the egg in salt water then it will shrink but if you place it in soda then it will expand.
If you place it in food coloring then it will turn to he color of the food coloring.

Data and Observations:
- Expands in vinegar
- expands in water
- expands the same in water
- shrinks the same in salt water
- shrinks in Pepsi
- shrinks in food coloring
- changes colors in food coloring
- changes colors in Pepsi
- Raw egg: 14 cm.
- in vinegar: 16 cm.
- in water: 16.6 cm.
- in salt water: 16.4
- in Pepsi: 15.9
- in food coloring:16.2
Conclusion:
When you place an egg in vinegar the shell is removed and the egg expands. In the water the egg shrinks just slightly and when you place it in the food coloring it shrinks just a little more. in the salt water it doesn't change then in the Pepsi it also shrinks. For each liquid it shrinks and doesn't expand. the thicker liquids weren't moving through the semi-permeable liquid as say, the plain water. My hypothesis was half correct. It did shrink in the salt water but it still shrunk in the soda and did not expand. It also did change color in the food coloring. For future experiments it may be better to have a wider range of liquids and leave the egg in the liquid a little longer. It may also be better to measure the liquids instead of just pouring it in the cup. My error was that i put both eggs in the same cup and may have affected how much of the substance was being absorbed through osmosis. so if i were to do this experiment i would place the eggs in two different cups.
