FROM SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION
We are extremely fortunate to have educational partnerships at Lisbon Elementary School. Business partnerships benefit our school in many ways. Whether the business partnerships provide financial assistance, help enhance the curriculum, or allow students to learn basic life skills, everyone benefits from these collaborations.
As our school benefits from these partnerships, the organizations also benefit from their collaboration with our school. Please support the organizations that partner with our school.
We would like to thank A-OK Mentoring-Tutoring, Inc., Howard County Library System: Howard County Library~Glenwood Branch, Howard County Local Children's Board, Howard County Office of Community Sustainability, Lisbon United Methodist Church, Sandy Spring Bank: Lisbon Branch, and The Grill At Lisbon for their commitment to our school and students.
If you have any recommendations for business partnerships, or if your company/employer would like to establish a business partnership, please contact me.
Thank you,
Mrs. Anoff, Principal

RELATED ARTS UPDATE
You may have noticed weekly due dates on assignments. For technology, art, media and music assignments are given weekly. Starting this cycle, these assignments will have a due date of the following Monday. This is to help students stay on track, and for the assignments to show up in their “To-Do” list. Due to the nature of the PE schedule, only 2 PE assignments are given during each cycle. You’ll see these due dates in the middle and at the end of the assignment. All of these assignments are not actually due until the end of the cycle. Even if an assignment is marked “Late,” please do not be concerned.
Cycle 2 will run from Monday, October 12th to Friday, November 13th. Each homeroom teacher will be sharing a schedule with you to help keep track of which class your child will attend synchronously and which classes your child has asynchronous lessons to complete for each week of the cycle. This schedule could be printed and used as a checklist each week to ensure that your child is staying on top of their related arts tasks.

CANVAS CALENDAR UPDATE
We are excited to announce that as of this week, you (and your student) can now view up to 20 calendars on the Canvas calendar at once! This will greatly improve your ability to see all events and assignments on the calendar at one time.
When logged in to Canvas, you have the ability to customize what appears on your calendar. Once you are in your calendar, look to the right hand side of the screen. Each calendar can be hidden or viewed by clicking on the color indicator next to the calendar name. To change the display color for a calendar, click on the peapod button next to the course name and choose your preferred color.
Don’t forget that there is a wonderful resource available to parents here that gives more information about how you can navigate Canvas and customize your dashboard.
If you haven’t heard, there is also a Canvas Parent App available for both iOS and Android operating systems. The Parent App displays grades, notations of submitted or missing work, all upcoming events for the student, and has in-app notification settings that can be customized for each child.
If you have any questions about the Canvas Calendar, please reach out to Mrs. Bennett @ kristen_bennett@hcpss.org.
HOW CAN I SEE MY STUDENTS GRADES?
Mrs. Hastings created a quick video tutorial to help you and your child access Canvas grades and find out if they have any missing assignments. In this video, she explains how to get from a Canvas course to see your child's grades, what might be missing, and what might be late.

INTERNET CONTENT FILTER - CHROMEBOOKS
About the Children's Internet Protection Act
The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was enacted by Congress to address concerns about children's access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet. CIPA imposes certain requirements, such as internet content filtering, on schools or libraries that receive discounts for Internet access through the E-rate program. More information on CIPA can be found on the FCC website (Links to an external site.).
HCPSS Policy and Procedures
In order to comply with CIPA and HCPSS Board of Education Policy 8080, Responsible Use of Technology (Links to an external site.), HCPSS attempts to filter abusive, libelous, obscene, offensive, profane, threatening, sexually explicit, pornographic, illegal, or other inappropriate material that is harmful to minors.
The HCPSS internet content filter works by categorization sites and blocking categories considered inappropriate for student viewing such as alcohol and gambling. However, due to the vast number of sites on the Internet, sites may occasionally be categorized incorrectly. When attempting to view sites that are blocked, computer users will receive a message similar to the one pictured here. The message will give the URL and it's category.

MAP TESTING
The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments are computer adaptive achievement assessments in Reading and Math. As a student responds to questions, the test responds to the student by adjusting the difficulty of the questions presented, up or down, to the student. MAP assessment items align to objectives in the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. This assessment is designed to measure student growth in Math and Reading, both during the school year and across multiple school years. The assessment allows teachers to see instructional strengths and needs for each student.
At the conclusion of the assessment, each student receives a score that aligns to an instructional level. MAP, in conjunction with other measures throughout the school year, helps teachers differentiate instruction within their classrooms. Home reports will be sent at the end of the testing window. A reminder will be shared with families for when these reports are being sent home.
On Wednesday October 7 and 14, students in grades 2-8 will take the Measured Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. The data from the MAP assessment will help schools and teachers measure where your child is starting the year academically. The HCPSS intends to also give the assessment in winter and spring to measure how your child’s learning is progressing throughout the year. The MAP test does not affect grades and the difficulty adjusts depending on how your child responds. It is normal for students to only answer about half the questions correctly. To learn more about the MAP assessment, please visit: https://www.nwea.org/the-map-suite/common-questions-families/
NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
The Howard County Board of Education recently issued a proclamation highlighting the National Hispanic Heritage Month in HCPSS.

SCHOOL MEALS
PTA STAFF APPRECIATION
We are going to host “Door to Door Prizes” for the staff. Once every couple of weeks, from now until we get back into the school building, we will be running games and raffles for the staff. We need your help with donated items to give away as prizes. We are asking for donations of gift cards ($10-$20) or holiday-related items for gift baskets (Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc). If there are any parents or guardians that love to do art or craft, we are also looking for donations of arts or crafts to give away.
Please contact Cathy Datz at president@lisbonpta.org for questions or donations.
