Suicide Palm

mackenzie calloway

Background Information

The species is known only from a single locality in the northwestern region of Madagascar. About 30 mature individuals are known in the wild. Grows in the gently rolling hills, and flatlands of the region. It grows in seasonally flooded lands. Nobody is sure about its uses, but people believe that since it's so rare it's probably a prized ornamental.

The increased frequency of fire is probably the main threat for them right now. Grazing by livestock is another thing that threatens the remaining habitat and the regeneration of this species.

Efforts for protection are things such as distribution of seeds and cultivation in botanic gardens.
