Midway Mustang Memo
February 2019
Dear Parents,
We have fabulous news to share! Our ITS, Jen Emmert, and Teacher of the Gifted, Jennifer Lundstrum, recently wrote a grant to one of our district’s Partners in Education, Beaver Toyota. The application for the grant requested funds to purchase a class set of virtual reality (VR) headsets for students. These devices provide opportunities for students to experience places and activities that many will never see. For example, students may take virtual field trips to places like the Grand Canyon or world renown museums. They can participate in activities that explore plant and animal cells and many other experiments. We were awarded this generous grant on Wednesday, February 14. Representatives from Beaver Toyota and the Forsyth County News visited the school to surprise us with the award. Many thanks to our dedicated teachers who tirelessly work to provide our learners with meaningful, innovative learning opportunities. We deeply appreciate our Partners in Education, like Beaver Toyota, who provide us with funds to make our dreams possible.
Speaking of dreams, we know our dreams tie directly to the goals we set for ourselves. This year we have been working with our students on two important Social Emotional Learning competencies, self-awareness and self-monitoring. Students set goals earlier in the year and it is time to see the progress they have made toward achieving their goals. Our next ASLT (Academic Student Led Team) meetings will be on March 20th and March 22nd. In addition to reviewing student progress, we will also take a look at the adjustments and/or new goals students have set which will carry them through the remainder of the year and into summer. Our Academic Student Led Teams exemplify our Leader in Me Habit: Synergizing. These teams allow students, parents, and teachers to team up and work toward a common goal. This relationship positively impacts and deepens the home/school connection. Together we are better and this is the heart of Synergy.
With kind regards,
Jan Munroe, Principal
Daphne Rogers, Assistant Principal
Ashley Starr, Administrative Assistant

Parent Feedback Needed!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Parents,
We need your help! We are looking for your feedback. We would like for you to complete the Georgia Parent Survey. It contains 24 questions. You may complete the survey using your personal computer, smartphone, or tablet. The data collected from the survey will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating, which is an indicator in our academic accountability system, the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI). Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis.

Thank you for help!
Coming soon...READ-A-THON
Our Read-a-thon will start March 11, 2019. Approximately 1 week before we start our first reading session we will send home paperwork with your reader explaining how you will activate their personal Read-a-thon page. You will know that we have distributed the take home sheet because we will also place a green Read-a-thon bracelet around your child’s wrist as a reminder.
We understand that, as parents, you have high expectations for the quality of your child’s education but also have limited time. That’s why we chose to hold a Read-a-thon. You will find this to be the easiest fundraiser possible. By simply activating your reader’s personal page and using the promotional tools found there, friends and family anywhere in the world can show their support for your reader by making a donation to our Read-a-thon. Your involvement in the Read-a-thon will help your child develop a lasting love of reading. We hope each one of you will activate your child’s personal page the day your child brings home their paperwork. Hopefully they will be wearing their green bracelet as well.

News from Nurse Monahan
Move Over Flu and Strep, Here Comes Lice and Allergies!
Warmer months increase the frequency of head lice!! Visit Midway Elementary and under Student Services, click on School Nurse and then click Lice to learn more about Forsyth County's lice policy that was established in 2017 by The Lice Task Force. Lice has many misconceptions but be reassured that open communication with the clinic can help avoid further transmission between students and assist you in the most efficient way to manage the condition. I am here to help!
It is also the time of year when allergy related symptoms can become bothersome in the school day. There are great resources that can send you daily pollen counts to help you identify and manage your allergies. Although spring allergy season usually starts in March, it can come as early as February. The clinic does not stock medications for students so if your child benefits from saline spray, eye drops or prescription allergy or asthma medication please have a parent bring it to the clinic so we can avoid phone calls home and keep your student comfortable in school. Allergy symptoms are unique to the student but sneezing, runny nose, watery, red or itchy eyes, ear "fullness" and congestion, headache and throat irritation are some of the more common symptoms.!
