HES Shark Scoop
October 21, 2022
From Principal Cutone
Dear Harwich Elementary School Families,
What a great week it has been! On Monday, we had our first All Shark Meeting of the year! All students, kindergarten through grade four, gathered in the gym for the first time in years. We had a number of exciting activities planned for the event that helped support our core values of being responsible, respectful, safe, and ready to learn.
Under the direction of Ms. Riley, Ms. Branchut’s fourth-grade class shared beautiful HES poetry that they had written and led us in singing our school song (accompanied by musical instruments and other artistic expressions). Our October Student Ambassadors presented a project they had worked on together, where they shared strategies on how students can be “ready to learn”. I read a book entitled, “When Sophie Thinks She Can’t…” by Molly Bang. This book has a great message about having a growth mindset and understanding that we can strengthen our brains just like we strengthen our muscles for sports. It encourages students to try things that may seem difficult at first, persevere, and embrace the power of “yet”. With practice, we can learn how to do hard things! The grand finale of the meeting was the tallying of the number of fish bowls that we have filled this school year with our whole class behavior incentive plans. This included celebratory pies in the face to Ms. Joy and the plan for today’s school wide spirit day. We look forward to continuing our All Shark meetings monthly, each time led by a new group of fourth-grade volunteers.
It was great to see so many of you in the building this week for parent-teacher conferences. Your ongoing partnership with us is incredibly important to your child's success. Thank you for taking the time to meet with your child's teacher.
Another great way to get involved in your child's education is to join our School Council. School Councils are required for public schools by Massachusetts general law, and they have the responsibility to:
adopt educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
identify the educational needs of students attending the school
review the annual budget for the building
formulate a School Improvement Plan
Composed of parents, educators, and community members who do not have children in the school, a School Council must have parity of representation with school personnel who are on the School Council.
All are welcome to apply; the only requirement is that you care about Harwich Elementary School and want to help us be the best that we can be. Whether you have previously served on the School Council or you would like to try something new, I encourage you to submit your name and a brief statement of interest to our PTO president, Crystal Tanguay @ Crystalhespto@gmail.com.
Our first meeting is on Monday, November 14, 2:45 - 3:45pm in the Professional Library at HES. Future meetings will be held at 2:45pm on January 16, March 13, and May 8. Thank you for considering this important work.
My best,
Christie

Queridas famílias da escola primária de Harwich,
Que ótima semana! Na segunda-feira, tivemos nosso primeiro All Shark Meeting do ano!
Meu melhor,
Christie

New Books in the HES Library
Fourth graders pose with some of the Exercise the Right to Read books in the library before checking them out. The books were purchased with funds raised by fourth graders last spring; these students are now in fifth grade in the middle school. The class of 2030 raised over $1500 for new books and to leave a legacy of reading for Harwich Elementary School. Thank you class of 2030 for your dedication and hard work!

Cape Cod Foster Closet
The Cape Cod Foster Closet provides necessary items to caregiver families such as clothing, shoes, toys and books for newborns through teens as well as baby equipment. All items have been donated and are provided free of charge to families who are caring for other people’s children on Cape Cod. This includes foster, pre-adoptive and relative caregiver families. In addition, we also provide resources such as support groups, mentoring, education, child care referral assistance, and information about local activities for children and families.
Founders Sharon and Andy Palmer are Eastham residents and foster parents. We realized there was a need for support of local foster families and decided to make it happen. We serve caregiver families across Cape Cod. We envision a vibrant community of compassionate, like-minded individuals who desire to encourage, serve and nurture foster families.
We would love to hear from you! Contact us at 508-514-7125 or through our website or Facebook page. Donate new or very gently used items. Monetary donations can be made on our website, www.capecodfostercloset.org. If you prefer checks can be made out to Nurturing Fostering Families, Inc. and mailed to 5 Teal Way, Eastham MA 02642. We also welcome volunteers to sort and organize clothing as well as drivers to pick up or deliver items when needed. Cape Cod Foster Closet is a program of Nurturing Foster Families, Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) organization.
