Weekly Tiger News

Emerson Elementary Communication - August 26, 2021

Principal's Message

Welcome Back Emerson Tigers!

Our Emerson staff are incredibly excited to have students back at school five days a week! Our first goal is to provide a safe, healthy school for students, teachers, and our support staff. To do that, we need to follow our current health and safety standards which we have outlined in our 2021-2022 Safety Plan/guidelines attached in this newsletter and will be available on the Emerson Elementary School website.

We can’t wait to welcome everyone back and see all of you at our Meet the Teacher school event on September 2! Emerson Tigers are going to have a wonderful year of learning, growth and fun.

Key Highlights in the Emerson Safety Plan

As you are probably aware, there are safety precautions that will be in place as directed by the Washington State Department of Health and the Snohomish County Health Dept. Our first goal is always to keep everyone safe at school:

  • Masks will be required indoors for everyone: staff, students, and visitors at all times (unless eating in our lunchroom)
  • Students will be seated at least 3 feet apart in the classroom, lunchroom and while lining up outside
  • Handwashing and hand sanitizing will continue to happen several times a day
  • All staff and volunteers (starting later in October) will be required to comply with our state’s vaccination mandate

Meet the Teacher, September 2nd, 5:00 to 6:00 PM

We are excited to welcome you to the Emerson playground for our Meet the Teacher event, scheduled for September 2 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Our teachers will be sending “welcome letters” prior to our event. We will not be posting lists, but will have staff members with class lists to help people find their teacher as well as staff members to help students find their correct classroom. Our teachers will be sending phone messages, calling and sending e-mails to our families. Families can pick a time that best meets their needs (between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m.). All our classroom teachers will be on the playground. Central/Emerson PTA will also be on the playground passing out ice cream and sharing information with families. We will be allowing Emerson students the opportunity to drop off school supplies in their classrooms. We will have additional staff members monitoring classrooms and helping students find their classrooms. Supplies can also be brought the first day of school. We want to keep this event as safe as possible so we are asking that everyone keep their distance and students will need to wear a mask before entering the building. After dropping off supplies, students will meet their families on the playground.

Go Tigers!

Arrival and Departure from School

Students can be dropped off curbside beginning at 8:25 a.m. School buses use the driveway to drop students off in the morning and we appreciate no automobiles in the driveway for safety reasons. We have crossing guards at several locations to assist students walking to school. They can be found at the crosswalk in front of the school, at the corner of 10th and Pine and 10th and Maple. These crosswalks are staffed beginning at 8:15 and at the end of the day until 3:45. Please use the crosswalks and encourage your children to do so as well when traveling to and from school. Students may ride their bike to school with parent permission. Students should wear a helmet if they choose to ride. Bike racks are located in front of the school by the ramp to the playground. Skateboards and scooters are not allowed at school.

Thursday Folders: Good communication is important between school and home. To assist parents in the communication process, we use the Thursday folder system for school-wide communication. Your child(ren) will be provided a folder. Please check items sent home in this folder and sign the enclosed sheet and return to school the next school day. There is a weekly progress report that comes home as well. If your child is not bringing home a folder on Thursday, please check with him/her as to the reason.

School Website: Please bookmark Emerson’s website. We hope to meet the needs of our parents, students, staff and community users.

Listserv - Our district uses a listserv to send newsletters, high school daily bulletins and other regular electronic communications from our schools and district. More than 10,000 people have already subscribed to our district's listserv application. If you have not already subscribed and would like to receive newsletters from Emerson Elementary, district news and/or information from other schools, please click here to follow the directions and subscribe to our listserv (SSD-Communications) You can also edit your subscription preferences through this site.

School Messenger - Our district uses the School Messenger automated system as a tool for communication with our parents, families and staff. School Messenger works with the district’s student-data system (Skyward/Family Access) to notify parents/guardians and staff through phone and/or email of emergencies, critical school and district messages, school/district closures, inclement weather, attendance issues, underfunded student meal accounts and other events/activities. The overall goal of using this service is for parents/guardians to receive critical information about Snohomish schools - especially information that affects their children - in a timely manner. As long as we have accurate primary phone numbers and emails on record for our students in Skyward/Family Access, parents/guardians should automatically receive these messages when they are sent out.

Community Flyers: All district-approved community fliers are located on our school website under the Community tab at the top of the page or you can follow the link at the bottom of this newsletter. Click on the section called District Approved Community Fliers. Fliers are reviewed and posted weekly by the school district (typically on Tuesdays). Feel free to email with any questions or concerns.

Please use our eLink/Versatrans online tool to find your student’s eligibility for bus service, bus stops and route information. (Note: Transportation information in Skyward/Family Access is not accurate. Please use the eLink/Verstrans online tool.) 2021-2022 routes and schedules will be available in eLink/Verstrans after Monday, August 30. After that time, please call the Transportation Office at 360-563-3525 if you don’t see route/schedule information available for your student.

Attendance Reminders

Research shows that regular attendance and punctuality have a positive effect on student learning and achievement. Regular attendance is essential to a student’s success in school.

If a student is going to be absent or tardy from school, the parent should call the school’s absentee message line, 360-563-7156, before 8:30 a.m. in the morning. Messages may be left on this message line at any time night or day. If we have not heard from you, we will attempt to call you to verify your student’s safety. For safety reasons, no student may leave the school campus during the school day without being signed out in person by his/her guardian or a designated adult.

According to Snohomish School District policy, absences due to illness or a health condition; a religious observance when requested by the student’s parents; a school approved activity; a family emergency; a school disciplinary action or short-term suspension as required by state law, are excused. When a student returns to school after an absence, according to state law, they must bring a note from their parent(s) verifying the reason for the absence. The note should include the date of absence, the reason and a parent signature.

From the School Nurse

Medication at School: Medication is defined as all drugs, whether prescription or over-the-counter. The school is authorized to administer oral medication by RCW 28A.210.260 and 28A.210.270 to students during school hours or while students are in the custody of the school only when necessary to permit the student to attend school. The staff does NOT administer medication by injection at school. Neither can they administer over the counter medication without the approved paperwork from your child’s healthcare provider (doctor).

Oral medication will be administered only when the school office is in receipt of a current, written request from a Licensed Health Care Provider and parent/legal guardian. Medication request forms are available in the school office and must be completely filled out. Medication must arrive at school in the original pharmacy container and delivered by an adult.

For more information please contact our Nurse, Marcia Alexander at marcia.alexander@sno.wednet.edu or 360-563-7162.

Important Message from our District office

We want to continue to keep you updated as we prepare for the return of all students to be in-person all day, five days per week this fall. We are excited that students will be in their classrooms with their teachers and peers.

Masks/face coverings

It is clear in the updated guidance and from directives from Governor Inslee that masks/face coverings are required inside of all K-12 schools and on all buses, regardless of vaccination status. This is a state requirement. Masks/face coverings are not required when outdoors. Mask/face covering exceptions may be made for students with certain medical conditions or receiving special education services in some cases and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

School Staff Vaccinations

Governor Inslee announced a new directive requiring all employees of public and private K–12 school districts to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by October 18, 2021. Our district is working to assure that all school employees working with students will be vaccinated before the deadline.

Central Emerson PTA

PTA is still looking for a Vice President for the PTA board to complete our team for PTA regulations. Please contact Sasha Richards at sasharichards@icloud.com for all details.

The Central-Emerson PTA will be at both Central and Emerson Meet the Teacher events on September 2. Look for our table, come ask questions and if you sign up to join the PTA, you will be entered into a raffle for a free Central-Emerson sweatshirt for parent and child. Please note, signing up does not require any volunteer hours - join to receive PTA news, support schools and events.

Central-Emerson PTA parent info meeting will be held September 20 from 6-7 p.m. at the Central Gym for all parents – come meet the PTA and principals, learn about volunteer activities, see what we have planned for fundraising for the year and bring new ideas.
