Queen Jocasta
Queen Jocasta was the wife of Lauis, and they had a son together (Oedipus). Lauis was killed leaving Jocasta single. After Oedipus defeated Sphinx, his reward was to marry Jocasta not knowing that she was his mother.
Lauis
Lauis was told from the Oracle of Apollo that his son was going to kill him, so he decided to get rid of his so. He gave him to a servant to kill by abandoning it on a mountain side.
King Polybus and Queen Merope.
King Polybus and Queen Merope rule the kingdom Cornith. They don't have a child, so they decide to adopt a kid. They get this kid from a man, that got the kid from the servant that didn't have the heart to kill them. They named this kid Oedipus.
Sphinx
Sphinx is a winged monster with a head of a women and the body of a lion that killed all the people that failed to answer her riddle. The riddle was: What goes on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three in the evening? Oedipus was the only one that was able to solve it, and then she killed herself and Oedipus was
proclaimed the savior.
Antigone & Ismene
Antigone & Ismene are the daughters of Jocasta and Oedipus. Sisters of Eteocles and Polynices.
Eteocles and Polynices.
Eteocles and Polynices are the sons of Jocasta and Oedipus. They are brothers of Antigone & Ismene.
Corinth
Cornith is ruled by King Polybus and Queen Merope. This is where Oedius grew up with his parents, and later on moved to Thebes trying to escape the after an oracle has predicted for him: That he will kill his father and marry his mother.
Thebes
Thebes is the place where Jocasta lived with Laius. When Oedipus traveled to Thebes, he killed Laius. When Thebes was attacked by the Sphinx, Oedipus was the one that saved the city by answering the riddle and was proclaimed the savior.
Oedipus
Oedipus is the son of Jocasta and Lauis. He was given to a servant by his parents, to get killed to prevent him from killing his father and marrying his mother. However, the servant didn't have the heart to kill him and gave him to a man that gave him to the queen and king of Cornith. When the Oracle of Apollo told him that he was going to kill his father and marry his mother, he decided to travel to thebes to prevent that from happening, not knowing that the queen and king weren't his parents. There, his wisdom defeated the Sphinx. The Sphinx kills himslef, and Oedipus is proclaimed the savior of Thebes, getting to marry Jocasta as a reward. Oedipus and Jocasta have a happy marriage and have two daughters, and two sons. Antigone & Ismene and Eteocles & Polynices.
Sophocles
The play that Sophocles wrote is merely the very end of a long story, and some plot background must be provided to make the story understandable for audiences.
Creon
Oedipus sends his brother-in-law,( brother of Jocasta)Creon, to the oracle of Apollo to ask how to lift this blight. The answer comes back is that he needs to find Laius' murderer and banish him from Thebes. What he didn't know is that it was Oedipus.
