A Look At Our Week....
Fundations: phonics and reading instruction
Our new letters/sounds this week are p-pan-/p/ and j-jug-/j/. We have been working on rhyming and counting syllables. You can have so much fun in the car/walking along playing rhyming games, and clapping out syllables. For instance, give your child a word and ask them how many syllables there are in that word. Encourage them to "Clap it out", or count the parts on their fingers.
Writing and Science:
This week we will start working on informational writing, while we study trees. We will be observing leaves, pine cones, and acorns and drawing and labeling these natural specimens. If anyone is going on a walk over the next few days, please collect some interesting leaves/acorns/pine cones/twigs for us to study. Some children are beginning to work on sentences, whilst others are working on recording all the sounds they hear in words as they label.
Math
We are starting our new unit on Geometry this week! We will be having a shapetastic time as we create 2D shapes with clay, and rubber bands on Geoboards. We are beginning with 2D shapes, and their attributes. We will also be checking that everyone has a firm understanding of positional words.
Our Math benchmarks are this week. All this means is that we measure your child's mathematical skills, in order to see which areas need support/extension.
Reading
The class will be meeting with their 3rd Grade Reading Buddies this week, and they will be helping the Kindergarteners read their levelled books. I will be sending home different level readers to some children this week. If you are not enjoying reading time with your child, please reach out to me and I can give you some tips. I remember my time as a parent of Kindergarteners - homework wasn't always a pleasant experience in our household!
Superstars!!
Thanks to the parents/grandparents that have volunteered to chaperone at the Nature Center this week. The kids are excited!!
