This Week at Brookside...
Remote Learning Edition 2: April 20, 2020
Week 5 Update
Hello Brookside Families!
It was great to see everyone back last week, online and participating in Google Meets, Zooms, and other engaging lessons and activities. At this point, the procedures and routines should become more automatic, particularly with students accessing virtual lessons and using the various web applications. However, we do continue to acknowledge that this is still a new normal for all of us and we are continuing to adapt, learn, and adjust, as we go.
The teachers and I greatly appreciate everyone's support and appreciation of our efforts during Remote Learning. The students deserve our best and we are doing everything in our power to give that to them day after day. I know parents have shared some wonderful emails with me about our staff and I encourage all of you to let our teachers know how amazing they are!
I would like to respectfully request a few things from our families as we move forward in out Remote Learning:
- Please make every effort to have your children attend the live sessions with teachers.
- Students should not be online working from their beds. Please make sure your child is up, out of bed, properly dressed, and ready for remote learning.
- Please provide students with a quiet space where they can engage and be productive. Parents should not be attending the live sessions with the teachers. These are meant for class instruction and for teacher to monitor student progress. Teachers will advise parents when a "class community" meeting will take place for all.
Additionally, please be reminded that:
- Teachers post their Google Classroom assignments each morning by 8:30 a.m.
- Each morning you receive a Brookside Learning from Home Attendance Sheet. We are requesting that parents complete the form, ASAP, each day for their child/ren, as this will be considered confirmation of receipt of the email and, in turn, will facilitate student attendance.
- Students are expected to complete assignments as assigned and comply with all policies regarding technology usage in the classroom. Student work submission should coincide with the teachers completion date identified within the assignment.
Thank you all for the great pictures you have submitted throughout the past two weeks! Please click HERE to view our Remote Learning Picture Folder!
We all hope that the members of our community remain in good health and that we are able to be together again in our schools as soon as we can.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and continued partnership.

Spring has sprung!
Although the calendar tells us it is Spring, the weather still remains a little chilly. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't get outside and enjoy a little fresh air.
Here are four great reasons children should be outdoors:
Strengthens the immune system
Helps burn extra energy
Promotes problem solving and cognitive thinking
Boosts vitamin D levels and uplifts mood
So, check the daily weather, and be aware of current forecasts. Remember, there is no bad weather, just wrong clothing. So, get outside and have a little fun!

Fourth Grade Readers Not Breaking Stride
During remote learning, Brookside teachers have found creative ways to continue read-alouds with their classes. Read-alouds not only encourage a joy of reading, but they also help develop comprehension, build vocabulary and listening skills, as well as assist children in making connections. In fourth grade, Mrs. Acosta, Mrs. Arditti, and Mrs. Fodor record read-alouds so their students can enjoy books, including "A Long Walk to Water" and "Finding Gobi." Then the teachers create a discussion page to give students a place to talk about the book. They also talk about the books during 'live' meetings online.
