COLLEGE COUNSELOR'S CORNER: OCTOBER EDITION
October 1st has become a red letter date in the yearly college admission cycle. With the revisions to the process of applying for need-based financial aid that were implemented for the 2017-2018 aid year, the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) now “opens” for completion beginning each year on October 1st.
As a former college admission counselor and in my years as a high school college counselor, I’m keenly aware that financial aid is always the most confusing and intimidating aspect of the admission process. It’s also the one most susceptible to myth and misinformation. The misinformation surrounding need-based financial aid has many unfortunate consequences, one of them being that many families who’d qualify for need-based financial aid from schools themselves don’t consider applying to them after seeing the “sticker price” of those schools.
A group called Student Loan Hero released the results of a survey that addressed common myths and misperceptions about applying for need-based financial aid using the FAFSA. It’s worth a read to debunk some of these myths!
Also of note, some colleges (primarily highly selective ones) will also require students and families to submit an additional financial aid application called the CSS Profile. Unlike the FAFSA, there is a cost associated with submitting this application to colleges; $25 for one application to be sent to one college and $16 for each additional report sent. The CSS Profile is a much more detailed version of the FAFSA and asks for information that the FAFSA doesn’t (for example, ”Do your parents own or rent their primary residence?” “What was the purchase price of the residence, if owned?” “How much debt remains on the residence?” “What is the fair market value of the residence?”). Colleges that use both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile will determine the type of state or federal aid students can receive by using the results of the FAFSA and how much institutional aid students can receive from the CSS Profile.
Also unlike the FAFSA, the CSS Profile has a “non-custodial parent form” that some schools require. In a situation where two parents are not married, FAFSA only asks for the financial information of the parent with whom the student lives more than 50% of the time or who provides the most financial support to the student. Schools that require the CSS Profile and the non-custodial parent form will ask for the financial information from both parents, regardless of living situation or financial support.
A list of colleges that use the CSS Profile and information on which schools do and don’t require the non-custodial parent form is available online. Colleges may have specific deadlines for submission of the FAFSA and/or the CSS Profile. This information is usually found on the websites of those colleges.
I recommend completing and submitting financial aid applications sooner rather than later to colleges that aren’t mandating submission by specific deadlines. Colleges can’t and won’t process financial aid applications and award financial aid unless a student is offered admission.
As always, I’m here to answer questions about this complex, but actually pretty straightforward process. Don’t forget that every college has financial aid officers who’ve forgotten more about financial aid than I’ll ever know. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them with any questions about applying for need-based aid at their individual schools. They’re usually very happy to lend a hand!
