Student Leadership Excursion
On Monday 2 August, the student leadership team travelled to North Tom Price Primary School to work with their student leadership teams to extend and develop their communication and teamwork skills.
The students participated in several activities including Danny's Diggers with representatives from Rio Tinto, listened to a speech by Sargent Nicole Mizen from Tom Price police station and had to work together to stack a tower of plastic bowls using no hands. Throughout the day, the students reflected on their own leadership styles, set goals on how they would like to improve their practice and used their problem solving and teamwork skills to solve real life problems.
We thank Mr Sheridan and North Tom Price Primary School for hosting us on this day.
Principal's Address
Resources Challenge
What a fantastic performance by our students at the resources Challenge last week. Our Room 8 team came equal first competing against seven other teams! With six judges and ten criteria, it was amazing how our team showed great teamwork, ingenuity, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to follow instructions and plans, plus effective clean up and rehabilitation. And all without adult support.
Incidentally, the majority of the judges were from the resources industry including the Tom Price Rio Tinto Operations Manager. Congratulations to our Room 6 team who showed fantastic improvement as the day progressed, which will set them up for 2022.
An extra shout out to Ty Peta and Dakota Blake who were identified by the judges as individual superstars within their teams. This success is a reflection of the CoRE program which is implemented in our school from Year 4 – 6, for three afternoons per week.
Mr Hickey
We wish Mr Hickey all the best as he recovers from a serious medical episode, and hope that he is 100% and back on his feet in the next few weeks. In the meantime Mr Otley has been taking the lead in Room 5.
Parent Workshop
We have developed a teaching framework at Paraburdoo Primary School which we would like to share with parents at a workshop on Tuesday 24 August at 6:45 pm in the Performing Arts room. We are aiming for no longer than 45 minutes to share this presentation. All parents are more than welcome to attend.
3-Way Conferences
As an additional form of Reporting to Parents, we invite you to register to meet with your child during Week 7 (30 August – 2 September) as they share some of their successes and talk about their learning goals. I would like to reiterate that this is a child driven event, and is not a parent/teacher meeting. Details on how to register have been provided on Connect. Click on the link below to view the notice.
WAPPA Conference
I am currently attending the WA Primary Principals Conference. This is an opportunity to share success stories and discuss challenges with colleagues, whilst sitting in on presentations on current educational practise, leadership, health and well-being, cultural awareness and many other relevent professional learning.
Staff Professional Learning
Learning is a lifelong pursuit. We have staff, not just teachers, modelling this constantly. There are a variety of Professional Learning opportunities both online and face to face, including courses, workshops, visiting other schools, and receiving on site coaching. As we develop our consistency of approaches and practise at Paraburdoo Primary School, the teachers attending such events does not impact upon the continuity of each child’s education, and in the long run, can only enhance it.
On our recent School Development Day, staff developed a ‘Staff Charter’, interrogated various sets of student performance data, were introduced to a Reading comprehension approach which will be implemented in all classes, examined planning documents and resources within the History and Social Sciences curriculum, and had a seed planted regarding the teaching of digital technologies.
Finally
I look forward to being in my first Paraburdoo Primary School photos next week, as last year’s photos were done before I arrived. We then move on to a big week of Faction Athletics and Science activities. Hot on the heels of this is Book Week. What a big fortnight at Paraburdoo Primary School!
I also mention that whilst the Olympic Games have been inspiring, and we have witnessed many awesome feats, and learnt the stories of many athletes, the upcoming Paralympics steps up another level in human endeavour, and presents a great message around focusing on the abilities we do have, and not on what we don’t! I look forward to this and I hope that everyone invites these athletes into their lounge rooms in the weeks to come.
