Chance the Rapper name-checks Re/Max. Will it boost the brand?
In a song about how he met his wife, the Emmy-winning rapper mentions that it was at an office party thrown by his now mother-in-law, who owns a Gold Coast Re/Max office.
In a song on his new album, released July 26, three-time Grammy Award-winner Chance the Rapper gives a shoutout to Re/Max, the real estate firm where his mother-in-law works.
Two minutes into "Zanies and Fools," one of the songs on his album "The Big Day," Chance raps about a divorced woman raising her daughters who “called up the Re/Max and opened her own site.” The woman goes on to throw a party for employees and friends, where Chance meets his future wife, who was performing a Destiny’s Child number with her sister.
“The one on the left, I think I might love her,” Chance raps about the performer.
Chance married "the one on the left" in March. She’s Kirsten Corley, the daughter of Janice Corley, who owns Re/Max Premier Properties, based in the Gold Coast. His mother is in real estate, too: Lisa Thompson-Bennett, a Crown Heights Realty agent, represented Chance in his $3.7 million purchase of a Streeterville condo in April 2018.
The mention of Re/Max is brief and incidental to Chance’s story of falling in love. Even so, it could be an effective plug, a Northwestern University marketing expert said.
In the modern fractured media landscape, consumer brands find that “it’s very difficult to reach young people today, and to reach them in a way that doesn’t feel completely commercial,” said Tim Calkins, clinical professor of marketing at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.
The line by Chance “is the best sort of endorsement because Chance apparently isn’t being paid for this—he’s talking about Re/Max as part of his life, and as an important part of his life.”
Young adults in Chance’s audience, who may be on the verge of buying homes themselves and who may not be particular to any real estate brand yet, might “say ‘Wow, Re/Max. That’s a brand I should think about,’ ” Calkins said.
The unexpected shoutout is more than welcome at Re/Max, Adam Contos, CEO of the Denver-based real estate company, said in a statement emailed to Crain’s. “Hearing the story of how Chance and Kirsten met at a Re/Max office party is a thrill for everyone associated with the brand,” Contos said. The rapper’s mother-in-law is “a treasured member of the Re/Max family,” he said.
Chance the Rapper did not respond to Crain’s request for comment. Neither did Janice Corley. Thompson-Bennett, the rapper’s mother, could not be reached for comment.
Contos wrote that Chance, who paved his own route to success in the music business by releasing his own recordings as free downloads years before a studio signed him, “is a great fit, because he’s clearly an entrepreneurial, hard-working professional who’s driven to be the best.”
The new song isn’t Chance’s first to call out brands by name. In July 2018, he released a song called "I Might Need Security," in which, at the 2:09 mark, he dissed Crain’s Chicago Business for “leaking my addy,” or reporting on his condo purchase. Also mentioned, in front of a backing track that repeats “F--- you,” are former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Sun-Times.
This is a career changing and very easy to execute concept.
There is no doubt that the direction of most of our industry is a transactional focus.Internet leads, predictive analytics you can buy, even some interaction on social media translate into a pre-occupation of “looking for your next deal.”
As you know, the Ninja philosophy is more of a focus on relationships. Ninjas understand the lifetime value of a relationship is significantly greater than any one transaction. Let’s talk about two concepts that allow us to change our mindset when it comes to looking for that next deal.
Concept #1 is a job description.

Thought of the week:
Create Fabled Service by being "the source".
Here's How to Trick Yourself Into Being Productive
If you’re struggling to maintain a productive schedule, or finding that tasks are left undone at the end of the week, you may be able to hack your way into heightened productivity. Below are a few tricks.
Dive in first thing. Start your day right by diving into a tough task first thing when you’re fresh, then taking a break for email or social media check-ins. This sets a tight pace for your day, rather than starting with emails or social media, which sets off a slower pace.
Get competitive. Competition is a great way to boost productivity, but you can achieve this result by being competitive with yourself! Can you beat your own time? Can you finish before your deadline?
Set a reward. Set a reward like a fun walk with friends, a coffee date or catching up on your favorite series later tonight. However, make sure to hold yourself accountable so you can’t cash in on your reward if you didn’t do the work. If you struggle with this, enlist a friend or spouse to help hold you accountable.
Talk to yourself. Motivational talk doesn’t need to come from an outside source. Practice a few motivational phrases using “you” instead of “I” and find one that resonates, like “You got this!” Whenever you’re in a slump, say it to yourself.
Set up procrastination time slots. You know at some point in the day you will want to look at social media, online shop or peruse the menu for that new restaurant downtown. Set yourself two or three 15-minute time slots for procrastination to take space in, and that’s it. Which leads us to…
Block social media. There are several apps you can install to temporarily block social media access from your phone or desktop. This will stop you from habitual distractions, like cruising Facebook every 20 minutes.
Try the one-task trick. If you’re really struggling to get on the productivity bus, tell yourself you can quit for the day after you slash one large item off your to-do list. Chances are, you’ll feel up for a few more tasks once that one is done. If not, at least you managed something!
Planting Your Future
What makes a day's work worthwhile? Is it the money you make? A sense of accomplishment? The feeling that you were "busy"?
Fighting today's fires is a good and necessary thing, but if it consumes all of our time, we feel that an opportunity to improve our future has slipped past.
Here are three simple techniques you can use to make sure you're always planting seeds for your future:
1. Try to "plant seeds" early in the day. As early risers will tell you, some of the most productive hours are first thing, before the rest of the world is going at it.
2. Look for projects that pay recurring dividends over time. For example: Incremental improvements in your website will help you generate more leads and serve your clients better. While the expense of those projects may take a while to recoup, the benefits over time are unlimited.
3. Recognize that a kindness or conversation is never wasted. You may have five "must do" tasks in a given day, but know that a 30-minute call with a customer-- even if it's just a casual chat-- is never time "down the drain."
Weigh the day's worth with the number of seeds you plant. No, they won't all bear fruit, but how else will you get anything to grow?
