Helpful Hints for Working with ESL students

ELPS English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)

What are they and why are they important?

ELPS are a part of your state required curriculum and can be found in Eduphoria (see screen shot below). They outline English language proficiency level descriptors and student expectations for ELL's. Effective instruction in second language acquisition involves providing ELL's opportunities to listen, speak, read and write at their current levels of English development while gradually increasing the linguistic complexity of the English they read, hear and are expected to speak and write.

How do I use them to guide my instruction?

These are the descriptors that you use when you evaluate your students on TELPAS. Remember the yellow chart (ELPS linguistic accommodation planning guide) that you received at the beginning of the school year? It is full of ideas on how to differentiate instruction for you ELL's on an individual bases. I am always happy to help you think of ways to make instruction impactful for your ELL's.

TELPAS is quickly approaching

We will have telpas training on the following day:

Bridlewood: February 4th 3:00 in The Space

College Street: February 9th 3:00 in the library

Donald: February 3rd 3:00 in the library

You will receive your manuals and important dates at that time, see you there!

Academic Vocabulary

Thank you for incorporating AVP into your lessons! I consistently see great examples that show proof of students thinking at a higher level. I will set up more games from the playbook for you to come see after TELPAS is wrapped up at beginning of April.

There are still spaces available for you to attend SIOP this school year:

Day 1 February 11th, day 2 February 25th and the online component will need to be completed February 25th-March 14th.
