Helpful Hints for Working with ESL students
ELPS English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)
ELPS are a part of your state required curriculum and can be found in Eduphoria (see screen shot below). They outline English language proficiency level descriptors and student expectations for ELL's. Effective instruction in second language acquisition involves providing ELL's opportunities to listen, speak, read and write at their current levels of English development while gradually increasing the linguistic complexity of the English they read, hear and are expected to speak and write.
How do I use them to guide my instruction?
These are the descriptors that you use when you evaluate your students on TELPAS. Remember the yellow chart (ELPS linguistic accommodation planning guide) that you received at the beginning of the school year? It is full of ideas on how to differentiate instruction for you ELL's on an individual bases. I am always happy to help you think of ways to make instruction impactful for your ELL's.
