BCMS Friday Rewind

"Warm Demanders"
Nancy Eiynck recently lent me a book titled "Multiplication is for White People": Raising Expectations for Other People's Children. There is some great stuff in this book that directly aligns with our work with AVID strategies and the belief that ALL students should have the opportunity to a great education and to become college ready. One thing that really stuck out to me was the term "Warm Demander." Even though it appears that this term has been around for many years, I had personally never heard of it. It really resonated with me and the types of teachers that are successful with middle-aged students. Although the book reinforced the positive things we have going here at BCMS, it also reminded me of the work we have yet to do here to go from good to great. Looking further into the term warm demander, I found the following article from 2008 that I found very interesting, and feel like it does a nice job of capturing what this looks like in the classroom. http://www.sjsu.edu/faculty/marachi/mle/Warm%20Demander%20Article.pdf
Simon Sinek on Millennials in the Workplace
Mark Mischke and I often share our staff presentations with each other throughout the year. Recently, Mark shared one of my favorite videos with his staff. It is a powerful video from Simon Sinek on the Millennial generation, who they are, and why there are the way they are. I know many of you have seen this video, but even if you have, it is a great reminder for better understanding this generation and becoming more effective working with and leading them. Check it out!
