Battle Grove's Catch of the Month
Principal's Message
Dear Battle Grove Families,
We are so excited to have shared our students progress through recent report cards and the upcoming family engagement event. So many of our students are making considerable progress. We hope that you will be able to attend our next family engagement event on February 20th. At this event, you will learn even more about your child’s individual progress from his/her classroom teacher. One thing that you can do to keep supporting your child’s progress is to ensure your child read’s for 20-30 minutes at home each and every evening. Students that read everyday develop higher level vocabulary, comprehension, and decoding skills!
As you know, BCPS has three snow days and then virtual snow days will be implemented. We will send out specific details about virtual snow days for BGE upon the third and next snow day. Please be sure to check your email for this information, if we have another school closing for snow.
As always, please know that you can always reach out to me with any questions or concerns by calling the front office or sending an email at kgallier@bcps.org.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
Did you know? 💭
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month in a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance
Strategies for Success 🏆
- Monitor your child’s attendance and contact the teacher to address any concerns.
- Post the school calendar on your refrigerator.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.
- Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent to support you and your student.
- Ask for help when you need it. School staff, after-school program providers, and other parents or community agencies are available to help families and address other experiences that make it difficult to attend and participate.
- Schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.

Volunteers: Gift of our Community!
Baltimore County Public Schools encourages and welcomes school volunteers. The academic achievement and educational experiences of all students are enhanced by a community invested in their learning. We invite parents, families, and community members to engage in volunteer activities in our schools from Kindergarten to high school and become partners in teaching and learning. Volunteers serve in a variety of roles, based on each school's needs.
Visit the BCPS Volunteer website to complete the application and training. If you have any questions, please contact our CARE Liaison, Chrissy Forsythe at 443-809-7500 or cforsythe2@bcps.org

A Message from our School Counselor, Mrs. Westdorp
During the month of February our school counseling lessons centered on Celebrating Differences. Students in primary grades had lessons that focused on understanding what makes people the same and different, both in ways that can be seen and unseen, as well as learning to appreciate and accept the differences in others. Primary students were also prompted to reflect on what makes them different/unique. The intermediate grades focused on how differences make communities stronger and reflected on how they could draw on their differences to better their communities. Topics of equity and equality were also explored. (Topics vary depending upon specific grade levels).
We also discussed cooperation as it related to celebrating differences.
It is our hope that the core curriculum counseling lessons will help to promote the social emotional, academic, and career development of our students. We hope that you can help your child reflect on these lessons by discussing their content together.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the program. I can be reached via phone at 443.809.5745 or via email at kwestdorp@bcps.org.
