Welcome to Math 801 with Mr. Accardi
What is your Walking Rate?
In this lesson we will collect individual walking rates and determine whether these rates are linear, proportional or both by examining tables and equations.
So what exactly will we be doing?
In this lesson, we will be continuing our Unit on linear relationships and focusing in particularly on unit rates. We will be having a "walkathon" amongst our class, having every single student walk 20 meters on an outside "track" already taped and measured by myself. I will be recording the time with a stopwatch, recording all of the data on a google spreadsheet that is already shared with all of the students so they can access all of the results. After the "walkathon" the students will be completing their classwork based on the results independently, completing a hard copy, then officially submitting their work through Google Docs. The technology used in this lesson will very simply be chrome books and the subsequent Google apps: Docs, Drive and Forms.
Quick Note
Google has the best apps and educational software that is available free to educators and students alike. I love the way that Google allows us to convey and exchange ideas using drive, making the communication process that much easier.
Tech Skills Support Synopsis
In this lesson, the students will be working mainly with Google Drive and subsequent apps on the site, Docs, Forms, etc. I believe that this platform is perfect for this type of activity as it allows students to collaborate inside the classroom and outside if necessary with Drive and the necessary sharing properties. Google Drive enhancing instruction as it allows the class to truly build off each other and work together in real time without all having to be crammed in the same tight quarters. For a successful completion of the project and the technical aspect of it, the students should and will be able to easily and effectively navigate through their Google account, quickly locating apps within their account for file sharing and collaborative group work. In addition, the students will need to be fluent in troubleshooting the site incase of sharing problems or loss of data (or at the very least have the contact info of a "tech buddy" that can assist him/her using the Google Handouts app.)
GEOMETRY!!!!! Let's talk about VOLUME
Volume of a Cylinder and Cone
In this lesson, we will examine and derive the volume of a cone from the existing volume formula for a cylinder. With manipulative's, we will collectively illustrate the relationship physically and mathematically. Using the Google Apps, we will easily convey and exchange ideas, collaborating on the assignment with the use of technology. Problems will be solved using real life tools and manipulative's, while the planning and formal write ups will be transcribed online using the Google platform. Technology will be a key to this unit as Geometry lends itself very nicely to the incorporation of technology (websites, tutorials, virtual demonstrations etc.)

Within this site, the students are not only responsible for recording all data using the Google Forms, but they are also required to demonstrate mastery of the topic by posting a self recorded video of them solving a problem with volume, and showing us all of the sites that they used as resources using a screencast tool.
