Superfoodie Day
GCISD Nutrition Services will feature pumpkin as part of our superfoodie day on Friday November 4. All students will have the opportunity to try a scratch prepared pumpkin spread at lunch. Pumpkin is often overlooked as a superfood. It has many nutritional benefits. It is a good source of iron, vitamins A & C and is low in calories. Some fun pumpkin facts include:
- The average weight of a pumpkin is 13 lbs. The seeds are also a good source of nutrition, rich in beta carotene fiber & protein.
- The U.S produces over 1.5 BILLION pounds of pumpkin per year
- Pumpkins are 90% water
Be sure to join us for a fun filled lunch in the cafeteria!
Library News
- Our Fall Book Fair is coming! The theme will be "All American Book Fair". It is scheduled to arrive Thursday, Nov. 3 and hopefully I can get it set up that afternoon and Friday. Monday, Nov. 7 will be our preview day and shopping days will run Tuesday, Nov. 8 through Tuesday, Nov. 15 at noon. We will not have an evening family event this fall. Instead, our family event will be in conjunction with our Veterans Day celebration. I figured families will already be here for that so why not make that our family shopping day as well. I am working on the online shopping page. As soon as it is up and ready, I'll send you the link. I'll also post it on my library web site and put it out on the BES FB page. I will have schedules out for you to sign up for preview and shopping times next week.
- The Library Ambassadors will be helping me with a book drive in Nov. for the GRACE Christmas Cottage so start going through your gently used books at home. We will also have a box at the book fair for new book donations and our collection jar for change which we will use to purchase new books for GRACE as well.
- Our Google Expedition set will be arriving Thursday, Nov. 17. Our first day to have the kit is Thursday, Nov. 17 (2 days after Book Fair ends!). This will be teacher preview day. Plan to come with your team during your conference period to explore and try out the devices and see how you can use them with your students. Please check out the Link explaining the program before you come: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JbTD3kzidfFUXVYJxwvLwtMD14r2PLUApOdtLzKqUms/edit (if you need permission to access, send me an email) Link to lessons other campuses have used with Google Expedition: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hhLYAt9gpF-0i0Q2I45LfRsfML0yCnGay5-44Mz8ttk/edit#gid=434924455
- The set will be available for classes to use:
- Friday, Nov. 18
- Monday, Nov. 28
- Tuesday, Nov. 29
- Wednesday, Nov. 30
- Thursday, Dec. 1
- Friday, Dec. 2
- Monday, Dec. 5
- We will NOT have regular library classes during this time period to allow access to Expedition lessons. Students can come individually or small groups to check out if needed. Check your calendars and see if there are any conflicts during this time period. I will be there to help, guide and troubleshoot when your classes come, but YOU will be doing the lesson with your students.
- Please note that we have 21 PK-5th classes along with GT, Specials, etc. that would all like a chance to use them during the 7 days we have them available. so discuss the possible lessons that your team could have utilizing Google Expedition. We will have a schedule sign up available soon for those teachers that choose to use them with their class.
- Then we have our author visit Tuesday, Nov. 29. Aaron Reynolds is a funny, entertaining author. I got to see him at our TLA conference last year and loved him. He will do 3 different presentations: See the schedule on the master calendar. Order forms to purchase books for Mr. Reynolds to autograph were in your box or delivered to you to send home. If you will put a reminder in your newsletter that order forms are due Thursday, Nov. 3. The Library Ambassadors will be eating lunch with Mr. Reynolds that day along with 3 winners from the Fall Festival's Silent Auction.
- Staples had donated a 3D printer to all of the elementary campuses - Yay! The district would like for them to be housed in the Library Learning Commons. Evan and I went to training next Monday afternoon. We will be sharing some guidelines and procedures for usage so we will let you know when we are ready for it to be used.
