Pathways for Learning

ISOK Offers 3 learning pathways for high school students to choose from:

  1. Traditional
  2. Focus Phoenix (credit recovery)
  3. Night School
Big picture

1. Traditional Pathway

Who: all students not in self-paced courses or night school

What: regular targeted instruction 4 days a week

When: according to the D2L class connect (CC) schedule

Where: login-learn.k12.com

Why:

  • Traditional instruction model for alternative education students
  • Smaller class sizes
  • Teachers are familiar with working with students who have struggled in school
  • Not unusual for students to be older than other students in that grade

How to Login:

Credential set up for student account

POC: Jennifer Pace, Lead Teacher jpace@insightok.org

Embedded Courses - option through Traditional Pathway only

Who: students who opt into embedded after conversation with counselor

When: CC schedule for the original course; runs on block schedule

Where: https://login-learn.k12.com/#login

Why:

  • additional credit earned OR
  • working in similar content course at the same time (2- for-1)

Example: Two science courses are needed. Some courses that are similar in nature can be embedded where student works with one teacher to complete assignments within one 'course' but ends up with credits for the 2 course requirements

Why:

  • Allows students to gain credits on their time not within the timeframe of traditional pathway

Edmentum Courses

Additional Courses Offered to ALL Students

Who: students interested in courses we don't offer, after conversation with counselor

What: learning platform

When: Edmentum (out-of-network) teacher provides schedule and deadlines

Where: https://edm.geniussis.com/PublicWelcome.aspx

Why: State-funded option to students seeking course opportunities not provided from their school of choice. The state provided funds and an opportunity for students to access courses their school wouldn't normally offer.

Additional Edmentum Information

  • There is an orientation that shows students how to access the class.
  • Each subject has multiple chapters.
  • Take a pre-test. If you score 100% it will skip that chapter of info automatically. The program adjusts to show what the student has mastered and they only have to complete the work in each chapter for what they do not show as mastered already from the pre-test.
  • The current grade shows the grade for the work they have completed so far
  • The course grade is the determiner of credit earned for the course. In other words, the student must have a passing course grade in order to get credit for the class.
