Due to the STAAR testing on March 28th and 29th, the date for sending elementary report cards home during that week has been changed district-wide to Thursday, March 30th.
Individual spring pictures were sent home earlier in the week with instructions and cost information included in your packet. You have the opportunity to purchase individual sheets or the entire package. You are only required to pay for what you decide to keep and we ask that you please return the rest. If you do not wish to purchase any of the pictures, please return the entire packet.
From the Nurse
When Your Child is Sick at School
Our clinic at Carlisle is very small. We are not equipped to maintain students in the clinic for extended periods of time. During our difficult cold and flu season there are sometimes multiple students waiting to be picked up from school, all of whom are likely to be contagious. It is best for them as well as the other students and staff if they are removed quickly from school. We appreciate it when parents can pick up their child quickly after a call from the nurse. It is expected that parents will make every effort to come for their child within thirty minutes. Please make arrangements with a friend or family member who can help you out if your work situation does not permit you to come for your sick child in a timely manner.
Cold and Flu Season is Upon Us!
Although the rate of illness at Carlisle has not spiked yet, we are hearing from other nearby campuses that the flu has arrived in Plano in a big way. Parents, we need your diligence in keeping sick children home from school. We all have a responsibility to prevent the spread of illness. Remember that students should stay home a full 24 hours after a fever, without the need for fever reducing medication, before returning to school. The same policy applies to students who have vomiting or diarrhea. There should be no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours and the student should be able to eat normally without a problem.
The common cold always presents a problem. There is often no fever. However, students whose symptoms are persistent or who cannot manage their symptoms (think Snot Monsters!) should stay at home.
Please remember that all medications are to be processed through the nurses office. The authorization form is available on the PISD website at: http://www.pisd.edu/parents/health/documents/MedAuthEngPro11-2015_002.pdf
We cannot stress enough the importance of effective HANDWASHING. Give me 5!
1. Water first. Always wet the hands thoroughly to begin.
2. Soap is next.
3. Scrubbing for 20 seconds. Don’t forget the back of the hands and in between fingers.
4. Rinse thoroughly.
5. Dry
EVEN COUGH DROPS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE MEDICATION!
Parents, cough drops and throat lozenges rarely contain any cough suppressing medication, however, PISD does require a medication authorization form. At school, students with a cough and / or sore throat are offered a salt water gargle, peppermint to suck on and frequent drinks of water. This is often just as effective or even more so than a cough drop.
Take a Taste Tuesday
This week we doubled back to the letter “N.” It is great that Nectarines are finally in season and both Sam’s and Walmart had them this week. Nectarines are a variety of the peach family. They are different because they have shiny smooth skin instead of fuzzy skin. Nectarines are generally smaller and have a slightly spicier taste than peaches. They do not last very long once they are purchase and they tend to bruise easily. Nectarines are a stone fruit which means they have a large pit in the middle. Some varieties are “freestone” and the flesh can be easily removed from the pit. Other varieties are called “cling.” This kind of nectarine is harder to get all of the fruit away from the pit. Nectarines are high in vitamins A and C. They contain some protein and fiber as well as healthy energy (fruit sugar).
Mrs. Lebeuf’s and Mrs. Broderick’s classes got to taste the nectarines today. Almost all of the students have had nectarines before and about 98% of the students liked the taste and would eat a nectarine again. Our consumer lesson for today was all about how some fruits and vegetables have to be in season in order for us to find them in the stores. However, with modern transportation we learned that we sometimes get our favorite fruits and vegetables from warmer parts of the USA and from countries in the southern hemisphere where the seasons are opposite ours. Look for nectarines on your next shopping trip – but don’t buy too many at once – just what you can eat in a few days. They bruise easily and don’t keep well for long.
