Lansing Elementary Weekly Update
Newsletter for the Lansing Elementary School Family
August 19, 2023
Dear Families,
We had a great first full week of school! We spent time getting to know students, we started our Fastbridge screening, we had our first fire drill, and we had our first PTA meeting. We also met as a traffic committee this week and discussed how to make dismissal run more smoothly.
Starting Monday (August 21) 1st grade car rider students will arrive and dismiss from the same location (the north side gate). 1st grade traffic will follow the same pattern in the AM and PM. Parents and guardians picking up kindergarten students will now be able to use the northeast roundabout to line up for Kindergarten drop off & pick up. Please see the map below and reach out with any questions.
This Monday (August 21st) we have our Back to School Night. This is an opportunity for families to see the classroom and learn about grade level expectations and procedures. Kindergarten and first grade parents and guardians are invited to join us in the gym at 4:30 for a brief welcome, then visit classrooms. Second grade and third grade families are invited to join us in the gym at 5:30 and will also have an opportunity to visit classrooms.
We will have Late Start this Thursday (August 24). This is when our teachers collaborate within their professional learning communities. Our building will open at 9:00 on Thursday (and any Thursday where we have 3 or more days of school). Morning buses will run one hour later than usual on Late Start days. Any family needing care for their K-5 student from 8:00-9:00 can receive this for free through Y-care. Please sign up below. We do not have adult supervision on the playgrounds before 9:00 on Late Start Thursdays, so please do not leave students unattended.
Students should now have tags on their backpacks indicating how they are going home. Please do not remove these. This assists us in ensuring your student is in the correct location at dismissal. Speaking of dismissal, parents and guardians can assist us at dismissal by refraining from parking in the pick-up lane, and/or walking up to the dismissal areas, and following the directions of dismissal staff.
If your student is a bus rider, I strongly encourage you to get the bus compass app. This will allow you to monitor bus location in real time.
We would like to remind families that all visitors must enter and sign in through the office. Our building theme this year is Stars! We look forward to recognizing our stars with you!
A few updates/information:
Our Schedule: Our school day is from 8:30-3:30 (M-W, & F) and 9:30-3:30 on Late Start Thursdays (if there are 3 or more days of school). Students are considered tardy if they arrive at school after 8:30 (M-W, & F) and 9:30 on Late Start Thursdays. If your student(s) is going to be late or absent please call us at 913-727-1128.
Arrival & Dismissal Map: Our updated traffic pattern map is attached below. 1st grade car riders will arrive on the NORTH side of the building and dismiss on the NORTH side. Please see our traffic map below.
Bus transportation: must be arranged by families. Please arrange bus transportation using the following link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScEsJBUyk0ji1m--u_x6dAYIfDmCyf0ndjZsYQgH6F-4N7PTg/viewform. Please see more bus information below.
Breakfast/Lunch: Information about cost, menu options, and general questions can be found on our nutrition services page: https://www.usd469.net/vnews/display.v/SEC/Family%20%26%20Students%7CNutrition%20Services
Family Events & PTA: Our next Parent-Teacher Association meeting is September 21. The doors open at 6:00 for socializing and the meeting starts at 6:30. See more information below.
Before/After School care: Please see Y-care flyers (coming soon). Parents/Guardians using Y-care this year will enter on the west side (2/3 side) through doors 20 & 21.
Routines: Some important school year routines include a consistent bedtime, getting plenty of sleep, and being prepared for school each day. Typically, routines take a few weeks to get down. Practice helps!.
As you are considering how your student will go home each day, please be as consistent as possible. We will continue to practice arrival and dismissal procedures. As students and families become more familiar and comfortable with these arrival and dismissal will go faster.
Have a wonderful week!
Respectfully,
Dr. Jennifer R. Kolb
