Principal's Message
Greetings Fir Grove Families!
It is so good to be back in the swing of things with students in the building. A school is meant to be a lively place to learn. We have that down at Fir Grove! Our 380+ students are building community throughout the day with their classroom teachers, peers, and all building staff. Please help us welcome our 59 Kindergarten families. The first few weeks of school are all about setting and teaching expectations, creating community, and getting to know each other better.
During the first weeks of school, we have flooded classrooms, the cafeteria and recesses with additional adults to supervise students, teach and reteach expectations and give students an opportunity to meet more building staff. We want to build connections with our learners across the building. Research shows that when schools create opportunities for relationships that leads to a strong community and to increased learning.
Recently, someone asked me about what our safety procedures are at Fir Grove. When I first arrived three years ago, I had our Beaverton School District Public Safety Department and Risk Management visit the school. We observed arrival and dismissal, and recesses, among other areas, and we walked the grounds. We made some changes at that time for the safety and security of our students, staff, and families. This year, I have plans to revisit our procedures with Risk Management and Public Safety. While I believe we are a safe school, I also think it is important to reflect and examine our practices. Here are a few ways that we work proactively to keep students safe.
- All visitors check in at the office.
- Visitors must use the office door to enter the building.
- All staff and visitors wear badges.
- We have staff radios throughout the building and recesses to maintain contact.
- Staff are educated on proper supervision and emergency procedures yearly. Safety practices are revisited throughout the year.
- We have at least two staff members on duty for recesses and lunches.
- We follow the Beaverton School District's Student Family Handbook for Student Safety Policies and Procedures and Disciplinary Practice Guidelines. (It is online and copies are in the office.)
- Our school counselor meets monthly with each class and part of her lessons include: conflict resolution, emotional awareness, and positive self concept.
- We hold Lockout, Lockdown, and fire drills regularly.
If you have questions about safety, bullying, or academics, please feel free to reach out to your classroom teacher or myself. Our community is stronger when we all work together.
Have a great Labor Day weekend. We look forward to seeing you all at our Back to School Night next Thursday, Sept. 6th. See below for more details.
REMINDER: Early Release Wednesdays will begin on September 5th @ 1:05pm.
