Write on Kindergarteners!
Our Kindergartners are becoming amazing authors! Their writing has grown so much this school year! We began with simple drawings and are now aiming for complete sentences! Throughout the year we develop our students into writers by beginning with telling a story by drawing pictures with appropriate details and colors and then go into labeling the pictures with beginning sounds and then labels written as they sound. We then practice a simple sentences to go along with the story under the pictures. Right now we are focused on Non-Fiction/Informative writing. We are writing facts about things students know about. (animals, objects, etc.) Students will be recording their observations of their classroom chicks as they change in their chick journals! We are also working on conventions…..Starting with uppercase and using lowercase for the rest, spaces and punctuation. Your child can practice putting these skills together by writing postcards to family and friends or a story of their own! Provide them with lots of opportunity and even some fun pencils and pens to make writing exciting!

Flu- This is not an April Fool’s joke…. Get your flu shot today! Its flu season! Please contact your healthcare provider or make an appointment at our Brickie Clinic 219-945-9383.
Vaccinations- All students should be up to date on their vaccinations. Indiana state law requires you to have up to date immunizations. If you have any questions or concerns please contact your school nurse.
Health Conditions- If your student has a specific health condition or needs special care during the school day such as medication, treatments, or monitoring, please inform your school nurse and provide your nurse with a care plan. Individual health care plans help keep your student safe and healthy.
Sick students- Please keep all sick children home from school- this includes fever greater than 100 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea. If you are unsure, please call your healthcare provider or school nurse for advice. Please do not send your student to school and instruct them to go directly to the nurse before the school day begins. If your student is sick, please follow the call off procedures. Again, if you have any questions or concerns please contact your school nurse. Please see attached chart to assist you in knowing when to keep your student home.
Head Lice- It’s that time of year where our students break out their coats, scarves and hats. Please encourage your child not to share such items as hats, scarves, brushes or any personal items. Lice is not a danger to your child’s health, it is simply an annoying problem that comes around this time of year, so no need to panic. Please know that anyone and everyone can get lice. Getting lice has nothing to do with you being clean or dirty, it only has to do with the fact that you are human. It is very important to check your family for lice this time of year regularly. If you find any live lice or eggs, it is absolutely necessary to treat each “infected” person, but more importantly, you must notify the school so that we can effectively and confidentially assist you with monitoring. The school nurse can assist you with proper treatment options as well as identify and demonstrate for you what to do.
CLOTHING- Please make sure your student has an extra change of clothing in his/her backpack incase needed for unseen circumstances that may arise during the school day.
If you have any questions, please call your school nurse or visit our school web page at http://www.hobart.k12.in.us for more information on student health, school forms, and other helpful links
ELC Heartthrobs!
Hello ELC parents and Happy Spring!! This is Ms. Brittney, the ELC School Counselor, here to give you some updates on what your students have been doing regarding social-emotional learning. In March, the SCOH partnered with Fair Haven Education to bring the Think First Stay Safe program to our elementary schools. Here at the ELC, we had presenters come into the classrooms for three 30 minute lessons on safety which included discussing stranger danger and body safety. Ask your Kinder what he/she learned from Miss Tammy or Miss Shana.
March also began our Too Good for Violence classroom lessons where I spend four days in the classroom teaching 30 minute lessons about addressing our problems in a safe way. This includes identifying what the problem is, thinking of different solutions, and then choosing the best solution for us. Seven out of our eleven Kindergarten classrooms have completed the lessons. The remaining four will be done after spring break. Try asking your Kinder to sing you the “What’s the Problem” song. It goes along to the “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” tune and goes like this:
What’s the problem? Do you know? Do you know?
What’s the problem? Do you know? Do you know?
Think, think, think of different things to do.
Now choose the one that’s best for you, best for you.
Once the Too Good for Violence lessons are completed, we’ll be ending our social-emotional learning in “Mindful” May where I will be going into the classrooms for one final lesson on mindfulness. This is a book lesson where I will read “Moody Cow Meditates” and we will be using Mind Jars (glitter jars) to help us practice our mindful breathing. Keep an eye out for the handout of instructions on how to create your own Mind Jar at home.
