HAWKtion volunteers needed!
We have begun preparation for another amazing silent & live auction fundraising event known as the Hawktion. The Hawktion is set for March 20th, 2020 (6pm) at 59 West....and WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Last year's Hawktion raised over $24,000! Surplus funds were utilized in ways that that directly benefit Lakewood students including 34 Chromebooks and a storage card for school use, listening centers for Kindergarten classrooms, a Sensory Path in the hallway, a 3D printer and filament, and a bookcase for the Kindergarten centrum. The event also funds PTA sponsored family events throughout the school year, teacher training and supplies for classrooms, field trips, enrichment, and so much more.
Last year’s Hawktion was so successful because of the many parent volunteers that worked diligently to make it happen. Our goal this year is to raise $30,000! But we can't do it alone.
How can you help??
1) Join the Auction Planning Committee via the Sign Up Genius link here -> https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/10c0f45afa72ea6ff2-auction We appreciate every bit of involvement - big or small!
2) Request donations - This is our highest priority right now and we can use all hands on deck. This volunteer opportunity does not require any experience as most donations are requested electronically via email or an online submission. We will even provide you with a list of businesses to contact.
3) Donate Items - If you or someone you know is a business owner and would like to donate an item, service, or experience, please let me know.
4) Monetary Donations - In recent years, each classroom chose a theme and we asked Lakewood families to donate items toward a classroom basket. We're doing things a little bit differently this year. We'll still be creating themed baskets, but instead of asking families to donate items, we're asking families for a monetary donation and the auction committee will create these themed baskets with the monetary donations. You can donate here: https://lakewoodpta1500.memberhub.store/

If you must pick your student early, please allow yourself plenty of time to come in, sign your student out and wait for he or she to be called to the office. We do not call students out from class before a parent arrives as that takes away from valuable instruction time. Thank you for understanding this policy.

3rd Grade Reading Law
In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law that requires schools to identify learners who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional help. The law states that third graders may repeat third grade if they are more than one grade level behind beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. These Facts for Families help families understand the Read by Grade Three Law so they can support their child.

Pick Up/Drop Off and Bus Area/Visitor Parking
The pick up/drop off area is located on the east side of the building. The buses are on the north side of the building, next to the staff and parent parking lot. The furthest west row of the parking lot (closest to the bus lane) will be designated for staff parking only. Parents wishing to walk up may park in the other two rows.
If parents are going to use the drop-off/pick-up area there are a few things that everyone must remember:
· Do not park in the designated pick-up/drop off area as it will stop the flow and will hold up everyone.
· No vehicles should be in the bus lane.
· Drop off lane is on the sidewalk only - please do not use the grass area for safety reasons.
· In order to expedite morning drop-off, please have your child ready to leave the car as you approach the drop off zone. Children should quickly exit the vehicle on the passenger side only, and may get out anywhere along the drop-off sidewalk. Please do not leave the driver’s seat. Pull as far forward to the end of the sidewalk as possible, so multiple cars can unload.
· To expedite pick up in the afternoon, once your child is in your vehicle, please depart promptly to keep the flow of traffic moving. If they require your assistance to buckle up, please pull forward into the loop so we may continue to load other students.
· If you need to spend more time dropping off, or picking your child up , please park in the parking lot and walk up.
· FOR THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE, PLEASE PARK IN DESIGNATED PARKING SPOTS ONLY. Please do not park in the driveway areas of the parking lot or drop children off from this area.
· Please do not park on the grass.
· We will NOT allow students to walk to parked cars at the middle school.
· PLEASE COMMUNICATE THESE GUIDELINES TO ALL CAREGIVERS WHO WILL BE USING PICK UP AND DROP OFF
Health Info
It is inevitable that children get sick from time to time. These guidelines will help to prevent the spread of illness to other students and staff. Children benefit greatly from the rest and fluids provided at home when they are ill.
"A well child belongs in school and a sick child belongs at home" - Oakland County Health Seminar
- FEVER - Depending on how your child feels he/she may attend school with a temperature less than 100 degrees F. It's recommended that a student should be without a fever for 24 hours (without fever reducing medication) before returning to school.
- STOMACHACHE, VOMITING, DIARRHEA - It is recommended that a child with vomiting and/or diarrhea be kept at home until symptoms have resolved for 24 hours and the child is able to keep in food and liquid.
- INFECTION AND ON ANTIBIOTICS - (i.e. respiratory infection) Children are no longer considered contagious after 24 hours of antibiotics, depending on how your child feels they may return to school.
- RASH - If you child has an unusual rash or it is associated with a fever, keep your child home until you have discussed the rash with your Health Care Provider.
- CONTAGIOUS DISEASE: strep throat, impetigo, bacterial pinkeye, may return after 24 hours of treatment with antibiotic.

- Head Lice is not considered a communicable disease, but is considered a nuisance. Please see the following link on treating and preventing Head Lice.

CHANGE OF CLOTHES - In elementary school we understand that accidents sometimes happen, even with the older kids. It's very helpful for your child to have a simple change of clothes tucked in their locker "just in case". We find students can easily transition back to class if they have a clean pair of clothes to change in to if needed.
MEDICATIONS- We recognize that there are times a student must take medication at school. If your student is required to take medication during school hours an adult must bring in the medication with its original label and with the Plan of Care form filled out by your student's physician. Plan of Care forms can be found at the link below:

Building Security
At Lakewood Elementary, one of our primary focuses is to provide a safe environment for our staff and families. In order to do this, we need your assistance. Please review the following information and make a point to follow these procedures:
- When you need to pick up your child from school, please report to the school office with picture identification and sign them out. We will call your child from his/her classroom. Our teachers are instructed not to release students unless they have been signed out at the office.
- Children are now familiar with the building, and should not need assistance getting to their classroom. If they do need assistance, a staff member will walk them to class.
- Please do not drop your student off early. There is no adult supervision outside in the morning, children are not permitted inside the building until the first bell rings at 9:05. As children arrive in the morning, student safeties will assist in lining up by grade. The official start of the students’ school day is 9:10 AM. Any children who arrive after that will be considered tardy, and a parent must sign the child in at the office.
- Dismissal is 4:07 PM, parents are asked to wait outside when coming to pick up their students.
Volunteers
VOLUNTEERS
Parental assistance and involvement is very much appreciated. There are many ways in which a parent may become involved. Some may work directly with the children in the classroom or help in the Media Center or office. Others may present a special activity in the classroom. Sometimes, teachers can use help in preparing materials that can be done in your home.
Volunteers who will be remaining in the building must sign in at the office. Unless you have made special arrangements with the teacher, please do not bring other children with you when you help in a classroom.
CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS (CRC)
The criminal record check is needed for volunteers, new and current, that will be alone with students. If the volunteer is a parent in a classroom with a teacher, a criminal record check does not need to be performed.
If you volunteer to chaperone for a field trip or to work alone with children, the teacher will then send your form in for processing. Your form must be turned in and processed before you can chaperone or work with children alone. Forms are also available on Lakewood’s website, under Parent Resources, then Forms.
