Swenson's Scoop

A little behind...

I apologize that I haven't sent out a newsletter since before Christmas. I guess the season got the best of me!

Please enjoy some pictures of events, projects, etc. that we worked on during the month of December.

What have we been up to?

We recently finished up our unit on natural disasters (read more about this below), and have since gone back to our regular schedule. We are currently working on fact and opinion in reading, possessive pronouns in grammar, and fractions in math. Fractions is a big unit and can be difficult for students. Any extra help you can give your child at home, would be beneficial to them.

We also completed our first Mystery Skype with a classroom in Baltimore, MD. For those of you who don't know, Mystery Skype is a geography game that classrooms play that is kind of like Guess Who. Our goal at the end is to figure out where each other are located by asking yes or no questions. Our students did a great job for the first time and figured out where they were located in about 15 minutes. Check out our blog to read more about it and see a couple of movies that students created.

Global School Play Day 2016

On Wednesday, February 3rd, Ripley will be participating in the Global School Play Day. This is a global event and students from all over the world will be participating. Please click on the button below to read more about this event.

Natural Disaster

We have been busy working on our Natural Disaster unit. During this unit, students researched a natural disaster and completed a newscast and diorama as their final projects. They are very excited to share their newscasts and dioramas with parents at conferences. In addition to the projects stated above, students also worked on a STEM project on tornado proofing a house. After researching, each group was asked to build a house out of the materials provided for them that would withstand a tornado. Check out our blog on Seesaw to see if our houses were able to withstand the "tornado."

Valentine's Day Party

This will take place on Friday, February 12th. I will be sending out a letter, as well as a class list (for Valentine's), on Monday. If you want to get a head start, click on the link below to view the letter.

If you volunteered to furnish treats, I will be in touch next week.

World Read Aloud Day

On Wednesday, February 24th, our classroom will be participating in World Read Aloud Day, and we are looking for a few people that would like to come in and read to us. If you or someone you know would like to help us with this, please let me know.

No School on Monday, February 15th - President's Day

Classroom Blog

Seesaw now has a classroom blogging option available that we will be trying out for the rest of the year. This is where I will be posting anything that I want to go out to all parents, and students will be posting on here as well. Click on the button to view our blog and leave us feedback.
Instead of buying Christmas gifts for our classmates this year, we decided to do something together instead and visited Mighty Dragons Preschool. Check out the pictures below.
