Updates from Mrs. Froning

February 10, 2019

Thank you to our PTA for an AWESOME night of Bingo!

Families had a great time at our Family Bingo night this past Friday! We are grateful to the many parents (and a few school students-former Oakley Owls) who volunteered their their for this event! I enjoyed calling the Bingo numbers along side Mrs. Bastuba, Mrs. Dabish, Ms. Pavelich, Mrs. Jeneary and Mrs. Rachwal!

News from the Nests!

This past Friday we met in one large nest (all school assembly) to kick off a Kindness Challenge for the month of March! While we always encourage acts of kindness, rather than just talk the talk, students will be challenged to document over 5,000 Acts of Kindness by Friday, March 29th. Anything from opening a door, picking up a pen, or even sharing a smile, no act is too small to document! Students will write their kind act on a strip of paper which will help create a "kindness chain" to help us see the number of kind acts growing throughout the month! During our assembly, the students enthusiastically accepted the challenge!

AND...I (Mrs. Froning) have accepted a challenge issues by the staff and student too! If we reach our goal of 5,000 Acts of Kindness, I will be duct taped to the wall by the students! Practicing kindness will help kindness truly "stick" in the hearts and minds of our whole school community so I will happily be "stuck" to the wall in celebration of our kindness!

Below is a beautiful video Mr. Peace shared with our students during his visit last month. Please take a few minutes to watch this with your children...it highlights simple acts of kindness. I have watched it many times and see something new and inspiring each time! Enjoy!

Rescheduled: Global Day of Play- Thursday, February 14th

From the Global School Play Day website:

February 4, 2015, was the first annual Global School Play Day for students in schools around the world. In year one, over 65,000 students participated! Over 177,000 students took part in 2016. In 2017, over 283,000 kids celebrated Global School Play Day. In 2018, over 385,000 students from 58 nations participated. Can we reach 500,000 students in 2019?

In his TEDx lecture, Peter Gray clearly argues the case that today's kids do not grow up playing and this has negatively impacted them in many ways. It's time we return the gift of play to this generation.

Oakley Park participated in GSPD last year and we are excited to do so again this year AND that we are able to reschedule for this week! Teachers have planned specific time periods of time during the school day on February 14th. If you would like more information about the classroom plan, please email your child's' teacher.

Lunch Menu changes...

Please be aware, a "snow day" results in changes on the lunch menu. Typically, what ever was to be served on the day school is canceled, will be served the following day. When possible we will try to send up dates. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility!

News from the Outreach Owl Student Leadership team

The Outreach Owls are thrilled to share the news that the food drive for the Lighthouse of Oakland County was a HUGE success! We exceeded our goal by about 100 items! Thank you to our amazing school community for supporting this important, student led service project!

2019-2020 WLCSD Calendar is now available!

Please note:

· We will start the school year prior to Labor Day again.

· Late starts (middle school) and early release (high schools) have been eliminated.

· There are several half-days throughout the school year.

As we have in the past, we will offer a reduced rate Prime Time Care service on each of these half days.

You might be wondering...Why are there so many half days?

Throughout the school year, there are eight half days that will be used for staff professional development. We recognize that half days can be inconvenient for families. That said, research has shown that when teachers receive ongoing, job-embedded professional development, they can increase student achievement by as much as 21 percentile points (Source). As a school and district, we are committed to continuous improvement and these eight half days are an essential part of that commitment. Although they may seem inconvenient, staff development opportunities are crucial to ensure we provide an exemplary education for our children.
