Information about Field Trips

Last week, you should have received a field trip information sheet. We are planning two field trips for the month of October. On October 1st we will travel to The Town Hall and to the Pike Road Library. During this trip, we will meet with Mayor Stone and take a tour of both places. This trip will help us to better understand the importance of leadership in our town and how important libraries are to our community as well. Because space is very limited, we will not be needing any chaperones for this event. The cost for this event is $2.00.

On October 20th, we will travel to the Pumpkin Patch at Dreamfield Farms. We will arrive there at 9am and will leave at 1pm. This is a great trip that will give our learners an opportunity to see a snapshot in to the life of rural living and farming and just how important it is to our community. Parents are welcome to join us for the event. However, you are responsible for transporting yourselves and you will be able to pay $5 at the gate for admission. You will have the option to purchase lunch at the concession stand that is available. The cost for our learners is $18.00. This fee includes admission, lunch, and a souvenir pumpkin.

You may use the following link to pay for the trips online or you may send a check made payable to Pike Road Schools for the cost of the trips. Please, no cash is accepted. I would like for all payments to be paid by September 28th please.

The Week Ahead

Theme Time: This week we will move our focus of community on to the community in our home, our family. Our learners will explore how important our family is to us and how our family contributes to the community. Our learners will also work on opening our Home Living Center this week. We will begin by brainstorming what components are needed for a home, they will actually work together to design our 2D house model and will build it this week. I can't wait to see what they create for our Home Living Center.

Center Time: Our learners will continue to help develop and set up our centers. This last week, we worked hard on creating centers in our learning space. The learners collaborated and named the following centers : Writing Workshop, Block City, Exploration Lab & Water Table, Tinker Toys, and the Library Express. We will develop our Home Living Center this week, and work on opening our Math center. They have also expressed interest in opening a Grocery Store. So we will probably explore that idea further during the week, we learn more about our Town Community.

Shared Reading, Shared Journal, and Poetry Journal: This week we will continue to work on identifying nouns, distinguishing between long and short vowel sounds, vowel sound letter patterns, and identifying syllables in words. We will also begin on the comprehension skill of making predictions from the texts.

Math: This week we will use the data collected from our Math at Home activity to make graphs, add, subtract, create word problems, and work on our algebraic thinking.
