Speech and Debate team WINS BIG TIME!! WAY TO GO TITANS!!
This weekend, the PHS Speech and Debate team had its single best competitive weekend in over a decade. Five students competed and ALL FIVE of our competitors made it to the final rounds of one of their events. It was incredibly exciting to see their hard work pay off over an incredibly long day of competition.
Please help me congratulate these five fine speakers:
Diego Rios Brady – 2nd Place, Varsity Impromptu*
Analina Hensey – 5th Place, Varsity Impromptu*
Sarah Chittle and Myra Ashraf – 5th Place, Varsity Duo Interpretation
Jenny Byrnes - -3rd Place, Novice Humorous Interpretation
There were close to 70 students entered in that event, and for our school to have not one but TWO of the top five speakers in this event is HUGE. It would be hard to even EXPLAIN just HOW huge this is in the world of Speech and Debate. Diego and Analina nailed it, big time. And if you don’t know the mechanics of Impromptu: students receive a slip of paper with three options of topics. In a mere TWO minutes of prep time, they select one of those and plan a five minute speech. Then, they stand up and give a five minute speech (or as close to as they can) without the use of any notes. It’s a high-wire acrobat act with no net, and they executed it flawlessly.
The tournament days are long, but staying all the way through awards because 100% of your team is getting something shiny makes all 15 hours of the competition worth it.
